This is done as part of the global campaign known as The Green Wave, which celebrates the International Day for Biodiversity and enables youth organisations from all around the world to participate and make a substantial difference – “one school, one project, one step at a time”.Brunei Darussalam was not exempt from this exciting occasion, with the local Forestry Department having provided UBD with a total of 800 native tree species to be progressively placed around the whole campus; so far a total of 300 species have been planted (Library Extension, SHBIE, FOS, FASS, IHS, UTH). Officers, staff and students of UBD participated in the event, with Yang Berhormat Awang Hj Mohd Shafiee Ahmad, member of the Brunei Legislative Council, present as the Guest of Honour.Groups worldwide who participated in the 2013 wave are visually represented by a tree on an interactive map. On 22 May, beginning at 8:20 p.m. local time in the GMT+ time zone, new trees would appear on the diagram. As in the previous years, the 2013 map filled up with trees in Asia and across continents to America, creating a “green wave” around the globe. The Green Wave is a project designed to support the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the world’s international treaty that promotes the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits derived from genetic resources. The project aims to help raise awareness and educate young people on the loss of biodiversity that is taking place and the need to take action.
