3DiscoverFEATUREAward of The Chancellor’s ScholarUniversiti Brunei Darussalam, 2012/2013 SessionHis Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to presenting The Chancellor’s Scholar UBD to two outstanding Bruneian students at a ceremony in London, United Kingdom on Sunday, 29 December 2013.Accompanying His Majesty were Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Anak Haji Mohamed Alam and members of the Royal Family. Also present at the ceremony were the Brunei Darussalam High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, the State Mufti and the Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) and Vice-Chancellor, Dato Paduka Dr Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi.This was the second award of the prestigious scholarship that was first introduced in 2012. The Chancellor’s Scholar UBD enables graduate studies at top universities overseas and is aimed to attract top candidates who are passionate about research and teaching. This scholarship first and foremost answers the call of Wawasan 2035 to create a nation of well-educated, highly skilled and successful citizens and residents, and, at the same instance, to increase high quality local human capacity for UBD, not only as academics, but also as leaders, managers and planners of the future, to ensure similar attributes, calibre and commendable qualifications as those at prestigious universities overseas.The 2013/2014 session saw the award going to two outstanding local students – Awang Haji Abdul Hanif bin Dato Paduka Haji Mahadi reading PhD in Inorganic Chemistry and Dyg Siti Nornadhirah binti Haji Amdani who will be reading PhD in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, both at the University of Oxford.After the award presentation, scholars and their parents had the opportunity to have an audience with His Majesty.Application for The Chancellor’s Scholar for the 2014/2015 session is expected to open February 2014.
