discoverFEATURE3The much-anticipated event in UBD’s yearly calendar has returned with much of the goings-on revolving around the dozens of achievements that have been proudly accomplished by the university’s very own students.From 27 February to 1 March 2014, visitors to the university’s Chancellor Hall situated on the campus itself were given a special glimpse into the four years that they can experience should they decide to study in UBD, with the opportunity to expand their horizons while being guided by experienced lecturers from all over the world.Accommodating much of the venue’s space, the various faculties and institutions took the time to set up their own spaces to cater to the needs of potential students and their parents, many of whom were seen benefitting from the information on the services offered by UBD.In tune with this year’s National Day theme ‘Generation with Vision’, UBD’s open day carries the same mantra, this time showcasing the work created and achieved by its own pool of talent, ranging from the arts, entrepreneurship as well as community service work, all of which form part of a crucial combination in the creation of holistic individuals equipped with the tools and knowledge that will contribute to the country’s development the moment they graduate .Among what could be seen included a number of student contributions with video presentations from different faculties that showcased students’ day-to-day activities as well as videos of life after they graduate as a means to supplement UBD’s Open Day; in this way, they share with visitors behind-the-scene activities that have enriched, and are enriching, the lives of its youths.UBD 2014OPEN DAYTo market the event itself, the students, apart from the utilisation of mainstream media, also cooperated with UBD staff to produce what is now a viral stop-motion video that has garnered the attention of the nation’s netizens, many of whom are youths that the university aims to attract.Interestingly as well, the Chancellor Hall’s decor for the event tapped into the creativity of UBD’s students, with banners lining its open space with an image of a united honeycomb to symbolise the unity of the varied programmes found under the unique GenNEXT system that encourages students to venture outside their comfort zone and explore beyond their own faculties. Dotting the hall’s floor were works of art presented by fourth year students as part of their capstone project from the Art and Creative Technology programme for the duration of the event; the exhibition provided visitors with a preview of what can be expected during the upcoming graduation art show slated to take place later in the year.Among what was anticipated or, more aptly, unanticipated, was the organisation of a student ‘flashtok’, where unsuspecting visitors bore witness to a UBD rendition of a flashmob that incorporated Brunei Darussalam’s cultural aspects, including the gulingtangan and choreography using body poses during the performance.The students’ contribution to the Open Day event, meanwhile, did not end with the videos and displays. During the event itself, volunteers as well as committee members of the students’ association were present throughout, acting as ushers for the visitors.The Career Fair was also held alongside the Open Day event. “We would like to express our gratitude to all parties involved in this annual event,” said the Students Association, giving thanks especially to private and public organisations that had agreed to partake in the gathering and whose representatives took the time to explain to students what is required once they enter the working world. “We would also like to thank the public for providing us with feedback and for their assistance in sharing updates in the event.
