8Employing their learned art skills and tapping into their reservoirs of sensitivity, imagination, exploration and creativity, 27 Art and Creative Technology (ACT) final year students exhibited their exceptional art and design capstone projects at the Art Gallery of the Chancellor Hall, UBD, on 9 April 2014. The exhibition was the second large-scale graduation exhibition of its kind at UBD. This year’s Spectacle 2014: Art & Design Graduation Show exhibition began with opening remarks by the Guest of Honour, Yang Mulia Associate Professor Dr. Azman Ahmad, UBD’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, on 9 April 2014 at 10am in the Art Gallery. After the Deputy Vice Chancellor’s address, the exhibition opened to family and friends of the exhibiting students. The six-week exhibition concluded on 24 May 2014. More than 1,500 visitors visited the six-week long exhibition including the Russian Ambassador, Mr. Victor Alexandrovich Seleznev; the Representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Brunei Darussalam, Mr. Albert Huang; and five secondary school teachers and students from Sixth Form Centre of Meragang, Lambak Kiri High School, Sixth Form Centre of Maktab Duli, KB Perdana Wazir High School, and Binturan High School. This year’s exhibition was well received and covered by the media, which ran featured stories with colour photos in both local English and Malay newspapers and television. Other events related to the capstone exhibition included a total of 27 gallery talks, which were presented over 2 days by all 27 students. During the gallery talks the students discussed the concepts and motivations behind each of their own carefully crafted pieces; they also explained how Bruneian culture shaped their work. Each student added information about the techniques behind their artwork. “Spectacle 2014” continued the legacy of the first graduation exhibition by being a feast for the eyes and a cornucopia of ideas for the mind. It was a high-calibre exhibition created by the talented second cohort of BA art and design students of UBD. “No matter what designs their artworks express, they all carry a unique creative concept or message. These concepts or messages are told through well-executed original paintings, murals, sculptures, photographs, videos, computer graphics, animations, product designs and mixed media installations,” said Professor Kong Ho, Associate Professor and Programme Leader of the ACT programme. Ho went on to say, “This graduation exhibition proves how contemporary art and design can be a valuable component for tying together this generation’s concerns through powerful visual expressions.” Spectacle 2014Art & Design Graduation Show
