03DISCOVER UBD APRIL - JUNE 2015a Message from ourassistant Vice ChancellorWe have had a great last few months as we see our research teams making greater impacts on society with their innovative research. It truly shows that learning in UBD takes place beyond the classroom and takes our students to a much larger platform. This issue, we have a theme of Energy and Islamic Studies - two of our many research thrusts. Brunei Darussalam’s oil and gas industry currently forms the heart of the country’s economy. Being the national university, we are dedicated to energy research with a forward vision towards renewable and alternative energy. In addition, Brunei being an Islamic country with modern values allows for plenty to learn about Islam in the Contemporary World. Research in UBD very often involves significant contribution from our students because here, we do not only impart knowledge, we co-learn with our students. While we strive to be at the forefront of research, we are also continuously improving our curriculum to give our students the best learning experience to prepare them for future industries. UBD is announcing yet another new exciting Master dual degree in Systems Engineering with Stevens Institute of Technology in the USA. Learning is a continuous life-long process so, we think our programmes should constantly be evolving to meet, or even exceed the standards of tomorrow. I believe our curious minds and passion for learning are what open doors to opportunities and possibilities. It is these curiosity and passion that help our students and academics reach greater heights in academia and research. Together, we make a powerful community that makes UBD the centre of innovative and academic excellence.Warm regards,Professor David KohAssistant Vice Chancellor(Research and Innovation)Chair Professor in Occupational HealthStriving towards Innovative Excellence
