03DISCOVER UBD JULY - SEPTEMBER 2015a Message from ourassistant Vice-ChancellorWelcome to the July - September 2015 issue of Discover UBD magazine. We recently celebrated our 27th Convocation and bade farewell to our final year students. On behalf of UBD, I would like to take this opportunity to say “Congratulations, Class of 2015! We wish you all the best in your future endeavours.” As we say goodbye to some familiar faces, we are welcoming new students to our campus for the August intake. This issue’s features and articles contribute to our theme of Entrepreneurship and Enterprise. Entrepreneurship is one of the important pillars of the GenNEXT curriculum. Here in UBD, we emphasise on nurturing entrepreneurial thinking from as early as the first year because we believe entrepreneurship is the key to accelerating growth. Students learn to be self-reliant and self-sustainable while contributing to economic growth.Read about how we incorporate entrepreneurship in our curriculum, activities and research in order to ensure everything we do is relevant with the needs of industries and society. To name a few, our Systems Engineering students pitched their ideas of innovation to potential business investors from Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB); our students and academics had an insightful discussion with Eminent Visiting Professor Eran Edirisinghe about bridging academia and industry through research; and UBD was recently granted three more patents. It is becoming increasingly apparent that markets of the 21st century are fast-changing and requires skills in broad disciplines. Our GenNEXT curriculum aims to address that need - to produce graduates highly skilled across disciplines, who can think like a leader, innovator and entrepreneur. As we begin a new academic year, the key question is: Can UBD make a difference to the larger world we live in? It is without a doubt that with our students’ thirst for learning, our academics’ curiosity to discover and share their knowledge, and our partners’ support to help shape our programmes for future needs - we can.
