03DISCOVER UBD OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2015a Message from ourassistant Vice-ChancellorAnother semester and another year is passing, and I am proud to say that we have had another great year at UBD. This year also marks our 30th anniversary. Over the last 30 years, UBD has forged close relations with its partners and developed new collaborations in research and study programmes, and our students continue to make us proud as they take on proactive roles to create success and become influential young leaders of our country. In this issue, we highlight Experiential Learning as our theme. At UBD, we believe one of the best forms of learning is through experience, which integrates the classroom and the real world. Our GenNEXT curriculum engages students with the world through the Discovery Year student exchanges, internships, incubation programmes, and community outreach projects in six continents. Through these activities, the students learn to transform ideas into impacts and become global citizens with aspirations. Read about the journeys of our students as they initiate the Human Library project to help bring education to children in remote villages, and how one student had the chance of a lifetime working at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) as an intern!Experiential learning is not limited to learning by doing, but also includes learning through the experience of others. In the past few months, UBD had the privilege to host Special Lectures by the Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security of Singapore, His Excellency Mr Teo Chee Hean; and the President of Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Joseph Sung; among others. Learning from successful figures provides our students the opportunity to broaden their horizons and raise aspirations.By connecting learning to the real world, our students can engage with local and international communities through knowledge, global experiences with drive and commitment. We hope our students find that the essence of education is not only to build their academic portfolio, but also to provide positive contribution to the economy, community and nation. Best regards,Dr Joyce teo siew YeanAssistant Vice-Chancellor(Global Affairs)Integratingthe Classroom and the Real World
