05DISCOVER UBDThis year saw 1,308 graduates, with 36 PhD graduates, surpassing last year’s record of 28. The total number of graduating students also comprised 346 Master holders, 827 Bachelor graduates as well as 1 Advanced Diploma and 98 Diploma recipients. This year also included graduates from the first batch of Bachelor in Systems Engineering. This year’s Convocation Exhibition showcased UBD’s innovative and blended teaching with emphasis on lifelong learning and entrepreneurship that embrace UBD’s progressive steps towards meeting the needs and demands of the local and global population through three initiatives: The Global Classroom, Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) Programmes, and Entrepreneurship Education. The Global Classroom offers simultaneous video-conferencing links with eight universities in Asia, including UBD, National University of Singapore, Seoul National University, National Taiwan University, University of Occupational and Environmental Health in Japan, United Nations University in Malaysia, Mahidol University in Thailand and Kagawa University in Japan. With around 200 international participants, the programme allows for real time participation, communication and round table discussions. The second exhibition focused on the latest programmes offered by the Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) in UBD, showcasing an online learning session that demonstrated their innovative digital approach to teaching and learning. C3L uses a unique blended learning style that mixes traditional face-to-face teaching while giving students and engaging online learning experience. The Entrepreneurship Education exhibition showcased UBD’s aspiration to become the leading university of innovation and enterprise through its innovative learning pedagogy strategy that embeds prominent entrepreneurial traits within the curriculum throughout all modules regardless of their disciplines. This ensures graduates develop solid entrepreneurial behaviour and thinking, encouraging self-reliance and independence and ultimately improving their employability. The Convocation Festival, in conjunction with the Convocation Ceremony, is a month-long celebration of UBD graduates’ success and includes various activities and events held until 4th October 2017. Themed “Youths are the Catalyst of Transformation for a Successful Future”, the officiation of the Convocation Festival or “Pesta Konvo” on 4th September showcased 13 innovative and creative projects by current and graduating students as well as UBD alumni that show constructive ideas of youth, courage in involving themselves in various fields and industries as well as their spirit in innovating the country and shaping the country’s future. Also in conjunction with the Convocation, a total of 96 medals, Book Prizes, and Excellence Awards were awarded to 83 students, five of whom were recipients of the coveted University Silver Medal Award. Amongst the recipients of the University Book Prize, 11 students and 68 students from Master’s Degree and Bachelor’s Degree programmes respectively received the prestigious award for their outstanding performance. Of the 66 Bachelor’s Degree Book Prize recipients, 26 were recipients for level 4000 and 5000 (majors), 25 for level 2000 and 3000 (majors) and 15 for level 1000 (majors). One student received the Book Prize for her outstanding performance in the Melayu Islam Beraja module and another student received the Book Prize for her outstanding performance in the Bachelor of Health Sciences programme (major: Medicine).In addition, seven students received Excellence Awards from Brunei LNG for being top achievers in their programmes, and one student received the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Best Student Award. Meanwhile, Excellence Awards were also given to four high-performing Diploma students currently in their final year.IN ADDITION TO ITS EXISTING RESEARCH THRUSTS SUCH AS BIODIVERSITY, ENERGY STUDIES AND ASIAN STUDIES, UBD ALSO HAS BEGUN FOCUSING ON ISLAMIC GOVERNANCE AS WELL AS DATA SCIENCE AND ANALYTICS.Graduates beaming proudly with their cerificates.
