3DiscoverFEATUREFaculty of Science students and staff build UBD’s first solar-powered vehicle forShell Eco-MarathonEight students and two staff members from the Faculty of Science, UBD constructed an energy-efficient vehicle that makes use of solar energy to compete in the Shell Eco-Marathon in Sepang, Malaysia which was held from 4 to 7 July 2012. Naming themselves Team GenNext, they set out to build the vehicle in December 2011 and have since managed, through hard work in research, design and construction, to create the Ajung UBD—UBD’s first solar-powered vehicle. The team members explained that most of the creation of the vehicle came from their own innovative ideas of implementing efficiency into the vehicle’s design. The Ajung UBD is powered by a combination of two energy sources: battery and solar cells, where light energy collected by the solar cells is converted to chemical energy and is used to charge the battery up to 48 volts. The battery in turn converts this energy to electrical energy to power up the vehicle’s 3000 watt motor, propelling the vehicle forward. The student members of Team GenNext are Haji Mohammad Redza Haji Hussin, Muhammad Faiq Haji Kanapiah, Abdul Azim Abdullah, Muhammad Khairulazmi Awang Zainudin, Nina Nadiyah Saidi, Mak Sheue Lie, Wong Teck Sion and Muhammad Auzi Ahadani. This project was part of the students’ GenNext Discovery Year Incubation programme. The two staff members involved in the project are Dr. Mohammad Iskandar Pengiran Haji Petra and Mohammad Eddy Haji Sabli.
