5DiscoverFEATUREInaugural Launch of The Brunei-US English Language Enrichment Project For ASEANby Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade andU.S. Secretary of StateHis Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Negara Brunei Darussalam, and Her Excellency Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of State of the United States of America, visited Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) on 7 September 2012 to inaugurate the launch of the Brunei-U.S. English Language Enrichment Project for ASEAN. The Brunei-U.S. English Language Enrichment Project for ASEAN is a project which will run for a period of five years and will involve Brunei Darussalam, the United States and all the countries of ASEAN. It aims to strengthen ASEAN as an institution and also the individual member states by developing the English language and associated skills of key personnel in the countries concerned. In addition, it will help foster other important educational and cultural links between the two countries and the countries of ASEAN.UBD, which has already implemented dynamic new approaches in its undergraduate programmes, has been chosen as the executive agency for the project on the Bruneian side. On the American side, the renowned East-West Center (EWC) in Hawai’i has been chosen to collaborate on the project. The aims of the project are to raise the levels of English of the participants, to raise awareness and appreciation of the rich cultural diversity of the peoples of ASEAN, and to support greater integration in ASEAN as the organisation moves towards the open ASEAN Community envisaged for 2015.
