2DiscoverCONTENTAs UBD’s staff and students move further along into the second semester of the 2012/2013 academic year, I am pleased to mention that a whole host of intellectual and social activities have lit up the campus and its surroundings. The amazing buzz that is palpable within the university is attributed to both a positive surge in student numbers (with its fresh January intake) and its lively research community. In line with UBD’s vision, mission and values to instil excellence and cultivate thriving research groups, staff here have embarked on a great many research projects that have broken new ground. Amongst others, projects include the study of woolly bats and their pitcher plant partners (p.23), marine acidification (p.22), and mobile access to local weather forecasts (p.25). UBD’s increasing number of advances in research bear testament to the wealth and health of the intellectual community at work here. UBD’s commitment to health care research and education is witnessed in further projects and classes conducted on the topic of mental health (p.24). Significantly, with the granting of the Award of the Companion of the College to His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam at the Royal College of General Practitioners in London, Brunei Darussalam’s emphasis on primary health care continues to grow. The exciting student life and continued opportunities for UBD students range from their participation in the recent 10th ASEAN YOUTH CUTURAL WEEK (p.26) to discovery-year experiences in our international partner universities (p.14). The rich student experience at UBD is augmented by educational prospects such as these that extend beyond the confines of the lecture theatres.UBD has also had the great pleasure to play host to visitors from Chulalongkorn (p.19), Ostrava (p.7), and Princeton (p.9) Universities, amongst others. Such exchanges seek to bolster and enrich both research and student experiences, as these joint endeavours continue to forge closer ties between UBD and these universities for future collaborative projects. Other noteworthy highlights include February’s National Day parade and the flag-raising ceremony held to celebrate Brunei Darussalam’s 29th National Day. Involved both as spectators and participants, UBD staff and students soaked up the atmosphere at the Taman Sir Omar Ali Saifuddien National Day celebration that was graced by the presence of His Majesty The Sultan. Finally, I would like to wish all students and staff a very good remainder of the semester, and take this opportunity to thank all contributors to this ninth issue of DiscoverUBD.
