Fifth Batch of UBD-Zhejiang University Scholars Return From China

The graduation ceremony for the fifth batch of 11 scholarship students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Zhejiang University under the joint Chemical and Process Engineering Scholarship Programme of Hengyi Industries was held on 10th July 2019 at the Indera Kayangan Ballroom of the Empire Hotel and Country Club.

Witnessing the ceremony as the guest of honour was Dr Haji Azman Ahmad, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education. Also in attendance was Her Excellency Yu Hong, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam.

The graduating scholars recently completed 18 months of Chemical and Process Engineering studies at Zhejiang University which included industrial training at Hengyi Industries' petrochemical plant in China. Following their graduation from Zhejiang University, the students will attend their final semester at UBD and another six months of internship at Hengyi Industries. Once they have competed the programme, they will then be offered a position at Hengyi Industries.

With the success of the joint Chemical and Process Engineering Scholarship Programme between UBD, Zhejiang Hengyi Group Co Ltd and Zhejiang University, the scholarship programme has been extended for a further five years. "The extension of this scholarship programme not only demonstrates Hengyi's commitment to Bruneisation, but also showcases the determination of Zhejiang University and UBD, two top universities of each nation, to push forward bilateral culture and academic cooperation," Chen Lian Cai, Chief Executive Officer of Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd said.

Highlighting how Hengyi's plant will become a beacon for Brunei-China economic cooperation, Chen added that "In Hengyi, we strive to not only recruit local talent, but also to equip them with the skillsets, coaching and exposure to the experience that would be necessary to grow the company and add economic value by contributing to the development of a competent Bruneian workforce and future Bruneian leaders of industry. With the extended agreement of this scholarship programme, we believe Hengyi will be able to further strengthen its commitment towards Bruneisation and contribute to Brunei Vision 2035."

Since 2014, a total of 68 scholars have completed their studies who are now part of the Hengyi workforce, working in various departments and taking up various roles in the Pulau Muara Besar (PMB) refinery and petrochemical project.

The graduation ceremony also saw the presentation of "The Series of Ancient Chinese Paintings" to UBD. The collection of paintings was jointly compiled and published by Zhejiang University and Cultural Heritage Bureau of Zhejiang Province. A major national cultural and publishing project, the collection is the first of its kind in the world focusing on traditional Chinese paintings on paper and silk spanning over 2000 years from the pre-Qin period to the Qing Dynasty.
