CAMES Postgraduate Symposium: Techno-Economic studies of Microgrid for Sustainable Development Goals
Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) offers well-rounded, holistic education that emphasises on broad-based, student-centric and experiential learning with an aim to prepare students to be future-ready. The undergraduate degree programmes incorporate the Discovery Year whereby students spend a year undergoing Study Abroad, Internship, Incubation or Community Outreach Project (COP) to provide students with skills beyond classroom settings. Additionally, strong industry linkages and partnerships with top-tiered universities worldwide strengthen teaching and research as well as equip students with skills that improve student employability.
UBD continuously reviews its curriculum whilst integrating innovation to further improve student employability in which its employment rate currently stands at about 88% within 24 months after completion of studies. Being now in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, UBD has added digital dimension across its curriculum to ensure graduates are digital savvy. Among the latest programmes offered at UBD include the Bachelor of Digital Sciences with majors in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, and Cybersecurity and Forensics.
Another initiative to increase employability is accreditation. Two more undergraduate programmes were recently officially recognised, namely the Geology programme by the ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) and the General Engineering programme by the Accreditation Board Engineering and Technology (ABET) in the USA. The Bachelors programme in General Engineering was conferred full ABET accreditation last year and backdated from October 2017. This is the first and currently the only engineering programme in Brunei Darussalam to be accredited by the prestigious ABET, assuring that UBD meets stringent international standards to produce graduates who are future-ready to enter key technical fields in innovation and emerging technologies. It is hoped this would push up further its current employment rate which currently stands at 97%.
Another major of the Bachelor of Engineering at UBD is the Chemical and Process Engineering which is the programme with the highest employment rate in the country irrespective of discipline and level. All UBD graduates of Chemical and Process Engineering since the first intake of the students have been employed by Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd to take up various roles in the Pulau Muara Besar (PMB) refinery and petrochemical projects.
Other Bachelors programmes in UBD are under Bachelor of Health Science, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Business. Bachelor of Health Science has an overall 96% employment rate and houses high in demand programmes such as Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing. There, prospective students acquire adequate hands-on training and experience real world scenarios through the state-of-the-art Simulation Centre.
The UBD School of Business and Economics (UBDSBE), a member of the Association of Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) offers the Bachelor of Business with 89% employment. Since 2011, UBDSBE's Accounting and Finance programme has been accredited by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) professional qualification. Entrepreneurship is the latest addition to the undergraduate programme of the Bachelor of Business. The Master of Applied Economics is also a new programme to train students with a mix of theoretical knowledge as well as professional experience in the real world to prepare them for jobs in business, research and international relations.
The Bachelor of Arts with overall employment rate of 87% offers a number of disciplines the latest addition of which is the interdisciplinary Design and Creative Industry programme. The Faculty of Science is offering a new Master of Science in Petroleum Geoscience which addresses the needs of scientists who have already worked in the industry, aiming to enhance their technical skills and qualifications. Last year, the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings placed UBD for the first time in the 301-400 band in the world for Physical Sciences which encompass the disciplines of Chemistry, Physics, Geology and Mathematics and Statistics, attesting to the quality of teaching and research in the faculty.
From the highly impactful research, as of today, UBD has filed 60 patents of which 38 were filed in the US. Two of these innovations were licensed to local industries in 2018 and 2020 respectively. For these efforts in innovation, UBD was awarded the Clarivate South and Southeast Asia Innovation Award 2020. UBD also emphasises on incubation, in particular, helping students turn innovative ideas into viable businesses. Under the guidance and support from the Entrepreneurship Village (EV), UBD has produced a total of over 300 startups. Additionally, through the UBD Startup Centre (USC) set up in 2019, alumni members can return to campus to further develop their businesses or as mentors.
The complete UBD experience combines high quality teaching, sophisticated technology, conducive infrastructure as well as university-industry linkages to produce highly employable graduates. This extends to current employees looking to upgrade or reskill in order to keep abreast with the ever-changing needs of various professions. Modules offered by the Centre for Lifelong learning (C3L) are ideal for this purpose, utilising Blended Learning as a way to minimise interruptions to daily life. Incorporating online resources in addition to face-to-face sessions, students are able to study at the pace, place and path of their own choosing.
