UBD holds the Opening Ceremony of Design Week 2021 (DW21), launching the event that will discuss and examine design and practice in the creative industries locally, regionally and internationally.
The Opening Ceremony of Design Week 2021 (DW21) was held online on Zoom on Thursday, 16 September 2021. The guest of honour for the ceremony was Javed Ahmad, the Chief Executive Officer of DARe (Darussalam Enterprise), a key partner of DW21. Also present was Professor Dr Mohd Ayub Sadiq @ Lin Naing, the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Innovation and Enterprise at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), who graciously attended on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor of UBD.
Over 90 people were present during the Zoom session, including other Assistant Vice Chancellors, Deans, and Directors of UBD, as well as invited speakers, presenters and panelists for DW21, and many other creatives, design industry professionals and members of the public, some of whom were tuning in from overseas.
During the Opening Ceremony, Dr Rui Oliveira Lopes and Hj Osman Hj Mohammad, the Executive Directors of DW21, introduced and presented the Design Week Awards, which aimed to showcase excellence and innovation in design and acknowledge the role of design in every aspect of our lives. The judging panel, which included internationally respected designers and selected national industry professionals, reviewed submissions from many designers, creatives, and agencies in Brunei Darussalam.
For the Opening Ceremony Dr Lopes announced the Jury's Choice, Honourable Mentions, and Shortlisted submissions in multiple categories, including Architecture, Communication Design, Digital Design, Fashion Design, Product Design, Spatial and Interior Design, Civic/Non-Profit, and Student. He also brought attendees on a guided virtual tour of the Awards exhibition. This virtual Awards exhibition is now open to the public and can be viewed online in the Design Awards section of the DW21 website.
Talks and sessions for DW21 began on Thursday, 16 September 2021, and will continue until Sunday, 26 September 2021. Sessions cover various areas under the four themes for DW21 this year, namely Sustainable Design, Creative/Smart Cities, Cultural Identity, and the Future of Design Work.
