The Harley Davidson Ride for Breast Cancer Awareness, organised by a Korean cosmetic company based in Brunei – Laneige - last October successfully raised $8,807.00 to fund breast cancer research in Brunei.
Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (IHS) received the cheque from the Manager of Laneige, Patricia Li. The donation came from proceeds of the pink ribbon T-Shirt sales organised in conjunction with the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign held on 15 to 19 October at The Mall, Gadong.
The institute aims to use the donated funds on ongoing breast cancer research conducted at IHS, where one of their research projects involves determining the contribution of genetics in breast cancer in Brunei. By searching for mutations in two predisposing breast cancer genes called BRCA1 and BRCA2, researchers at the institute hope to establish that, like in other populations, genetics is a risk factor for breast cancer within the Brunei population. Such data, with genetic counselling, will be useful in helping patients and their family members understand and manage the disease better.
Breast cancer has been one of the top leading causes of death in Brunei for the last five years, with around 70 to 80 cases of breast cancer diagnosed every year among women in the country.
The campaign was to raise awareness among women - especially those from younger age groups - about the importance of knowing how to detect the early symptoms of breast cancer as well as to be able to talk about the disease. The campaign was held by Laneige in collaboration with the HealthPromotion Centre, Ministry of Health, and The Brunei Cancer Centre.
