Dr. Daphne Lai, Senior Assistant Professor at the School of Digital Science, has been awarded the UL Research Institutes-ASEAN-U.S. Science Prize for Women 2024 in the Mid-career category.
This year’s theme, Climate Resilience and Adaptation, highlights the importance of sustainable solutions in addressing environmental challenges. Dr. Lai’s award-winning presentation showcased her collaborative work applying Data Science and AI in tree species geo-identification, forest change detection, and mineral catalyst characterisation.
Notably, Dr. Lai is the first winner from Brunei to receive this prestigious accolade, which celebrates outstanding female scientists from ASEAN member nations for their exceptional academic and professional achievements. She also received a personal congratulatory letter from Iraq War Veteran and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth, further underscoring the significance of her accomplishments.
The 2024 Prize recognizes female scientists whose work has significantly advanced societal well-being through innovative and sustainable solutions. It also aims to highlight their vital role in inspiring and mentoring the next generation of women pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
