Universiti Brunei Darussalam > Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

About

Its research, teaching and learning, and community interaction focuses on the challenges of being human in a rapidly globalising world.

It is our goal to not only become the base for training in the humanities in particular the Arts, Languages and Social Sciences, but to
provide teaching and research that is relevant to the region, country and continent, and is internationally competitive.

Teaching

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) is the largest faculty in Universiti Brunei Darussalam in terms of staff and student numbers with about 2000 students and 60 staff.

The Faculty offers sever major programmes at undergraduate level, each of which is also available at PhD and Master’s level

  • Bahasa Melayu dan Lingustik
  • English Studies
  • Geography, Environment and Development
  • Historical and International Studies
  • Kesusasteraan Melayu
  • Sociology & Anthropology
  • Design & Creative Industries

In addition, the Faculty offers a number of Master of Arts by Coursework and several Minor programmes.

In this faculty we are committed to producing an educational experience which is student-centric and allows for innovative teaching and learning which go beyond the traditional lecture. Students in the faculty will be involved in presentations, going on field trips and using social media as part of their learning.

Staff are also involved in a wide variety of research ranging from individual research on traditional topics to cutting edge teamwork with colleagues in other universities. Major areas of research include environmental studies of Kampong Ayer and studies of Borneo languages, including Malay, other indigenous languages and Bruneian English. Given the situation of the university, FASS is particularly concerned with the study of aspects of Borneo, both Brunei and beyond, and does research on linguistic, social, geographical and historical aspects of this island.

In line with the university’s emphasis on cross- and interdisciplinary teaching and research, an increasing number of staff teach in more than one programme across the faculty so that insights from diverse disciplines are brought to bear on research problems and teaching. Modules are also usually taught by more than one member of staff so students are exposed to a variety of viewpoints, experience and approaches. Since academic staff come from a wide variety of backgrounds in both academic and geographical terms, students will have the opportunity to work with both local Bruneian and foreign staff, giving the benefits of both local knowledge and wider experience.

While FASS is of course part of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, it is also part of the wider community, both in Brunei Darussalam and further a field. Students, therefore, have the opportunity as part of their Discovery Year, of working with employers both in the public and private sectors, as well as studying abroad, whether in Asia or further afield. They can also take part in community outreach programmes, both in Brunei and abroad. For several years students from FASS have taught English and Malay in Southern Thailand, as well as studying in universities in Australia, the UK, the USA, Japan and Korea, among others.

Study in FASS, therefore, combines the focus on relevant problems and knowledge which comes from studying at your national university with the opportunity to broaden your wings and be part of new ideas, new experiences and new frontiers.
