Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) is providing a platform for emerging student filmmakers to explore new creative directions, as storytelling continues to evolve alongside technologies such as artificial intelligence.
Held at the Pro-Chancellor Arts Centre, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), the programme featured 31 short films across a range of genres, including Animation, Documentary, Fiction, and Music Video. For the first time, it also introduced a dedicated category for AI-generated films, highlighting how digital tools are beginning to reshape the creative process.
Produced by students from UBD and Politeknik Brunei (PB), the films explored a wide range of themes and styles, reflecting both technical development and personal expression. From visually driven narratives to experimental formats, the works demonstrated how young creators are pushing the boundaries of storytelling.
One of the key highlights was the inclusion of AI-generated short films, marking an early exploration of how technology can be used not just as a tool, but as part of the creative process itself. The showcase reflects a growing shift in the media landscape, where traditional filmmaking techniques are increasingly intersecting with emerging digital capabilities.
As part of the programme, students received direct feedback from industry practitioners, including film producer Nurain Abdullah of Regalblue Production and senior producer Pengiran Amali Haji Roslin from Radio Television Brunei (RTB). Their insights focused on strengthening key aspects such as sound design and subtitling, both essential for reaching wider audiences and meeting industry standards.
Beyond the screening, the initiative reflects UBD’s commitment to nurturing future-ready talent by providing opportunities for students to engage with both creative practice and evolving technologies. It also serves as a pathway for further development, with selected works expected to progress to the upcoming PRISM UBD Short Film Festival later this year.
By bringing together student creators, industry perspectives and new digital approaches, the programme highlights how UBD continues to support the next generation of storytellers in shaping a rapidly changing creative landscape.
