The Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Centre for Islamic Studies (SOASCIS) is conducting research on “Islamic Power Currencies: A Qur’anic Framework for Understanding Power, Authority, and Legitimacy,” and seeks to hire one (1) Part-time Research Assistant at the Master’s Degree level for a period of four (4) months, from September 2026 to January 2027.
The Role
We seek candidates with a background in Qur’an or Tafsir studies, with interest in political sociology or political thought. The Research Assistant will assist with data collection and coding of Qur’anic verses relevant to the study’s power, authority, and legitimacy framework, conduct close reading and exegetical analysis of primary Arabic sources and classical tafsir literature, and identify and verify verses, themes, and interpretive nuances relating to power dimensions.
Minimum requirements:
- MA in Islamic Studies (Qur’an, Tafsir, Hadith, Fiqh, Uṣūl al-Fiqh, Islamic Political Thought/Governance)
- Demonstrated interest in political sociology or political thought
- Specialisation and competence in classical Arabic
- Competence in tafsir methodology and Hadith sciences
- Background in classical Islamic sciences will be an advantage.
