UBD Signs MoU with Sunway University, Malaysia

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Sunway University, Malaysia have formalised their partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 22nd October 2025. The MoU was signed by Dr Hazri Haji Kifle, Vice-Chancellor of UBD, and Professor Sibrandes Poppema, President and Vice-Chancellor of Sunway University. The ceremony was witnessed by senior officials and representatives from both institutions.

The MoU outlines several opportunities for collaboration, including student and staff exchanges, academic development, and joint collaborative research in relation to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In his remarks, Dr Hazri expressed that UBD is pleased to take this significant step with Sunway University, recognising the shared commitment of both institutions to advancing education, research, and community engagement. He noted that Sunway University’s strong reputation for academic excellence, leadership, and global perspective aligns closely with UBD’s aspirations to nurture graduates who are equipped to contribute meaningfully to society and to global sustainable development.

Professor Sibrandes Poppema shared insights into Sunway University’s “Community Service for Planetary Health” initiative, an exemplary model of how universities can create tangible impact beyond their campuses. Through this programme, students and faculties collaborate with residents of an adopted urban community of over 26,000 people to address issues such as accessibility to education, public health etc. Efforts include educational outreach, health screenings, environmental clean-ups, solar lighting projects, and employment opportunities facilitated through partnerships with local industries.

The partnership between UBD and Sunway University signifies a joint commitment to shaping universities as engines of societal progress. Through collaborative initiatives in education, research, and community development, both institutions aim to empower students as agents of change and to advance sustainable solutions that uplift communities. This MoU thus lays the foundation for a purposeful partnership anchored in impact and the shared pursuit of a healthier planet and a better future for all.
