21st January 2026, Bandar Seri Begawan – The Office of University Alumni (OUA), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), organised the Inclusive Futures Workshop: Supporting Students with Visual Impairment (VI) at Ruang Bicara Minda, UBD, an initiative aimed at providing university alumni with opportunities to contribute knowledge, share expertise, and engage with students, staff, and the wider university community, thereby further strengthening inclusivity within the community.
The workshop was facilitated by two UBD alumni; Sheikh Mohamed Izzat Sheikh Haji Khalid, Special Education Officer with extensive experience in training and advocacy for students with visual impairments; and Muhamad Haziq Shafiq Haji Aisha, a UBD alumnus from the Class of 2024. Both facilitators shared perspectives as persons with visual impairment (B1 category) and contributed practical insights into accessibility, resilience, and effective learning strategies.
The workshop offered participants practical strategies, interactive experiences, and guided reflections to explore effective ways of supporting students with visual disabilities. More than 15 participants, comprising university academics, staff, and students, developed greater confidence in applying practical knowledge and gained valuable insights into how alumni expertise can enhance teaching, student support, and professional development.
The initiative was further strengthened through collaboration with the Special Education Unit, Ministry of Education, highlighting the value of cross-institutional engagement and knowledge exchange among alumni, UBD, and national stakeholders.
The Inclusive Futures initiative also reflects OUA’s renewed focus on creating meaningful platforms for alumni engagement, where alumni can share expertise, collaborate on research, contribute to professional development, and participate in initiatives across a range of topics, from technology and innovation to leadership and social justice empowerment.
Alumni who wish to make a difference at UBD are encouraged to get involved and contribute their expertise. Opportunities include leading workshops, participating in knowledge-sharing sessions, sharing professional experiences and stories, collaborating on research, and supporting student development. Alumni interested in contributing to UBD’s Inclusive Futures initiatives or exploring other ways to engage with the university are invited to contact the Office of University Alumni at alumni.office@ubd.edu.bn to find out more about how they can make an impact.
