Solar Asset Powers UBD’s Inspiring Hub

Marking a significant milestone in the university’s sustainability journey, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), through the Office of Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Industry Engagement & Entrepreneurship Development, IEED) announced that the Inspiring Hub on campus has been partially powered by a solar photovoltaic (PV) system.

Completed on 31st December 2025, the 75 kWh solar PV system located on the rooftop of the building was donated by Berakas Power Company. This initiative reflects a strong collaboration between academia and industry in advancing the implementation of renewable energy and promoting environmental responsibility.

With an average of four hours of effective sunlight per day, the system generates approximately 300 kWh of clean energy daily, equivalent to an estimated 109,500 kWh annually. This renewable energy output plays a key role in reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources while contributing to lower operational energy costs.

To date, the system has generated approximately 35.8 MWh of clean electricity, offsetting an estimated 15 metric tonnes of carbon emissions. All energy produced has been fully utilised on-site, demonstrating its immediate contribution to meeting campus energy demand.

In terms of environmental impact, the solar asset is projected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 40 metric tonnes annually under a low-intensity grid condition, and up to 89.8 metric tonnes under a high-intensity grid condition. This reduction highlights the asset’s role in mitigating climate change and promoting sustainable energy practices within the campus.

The Inspiring Hub solar installation directly supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including: SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action)

This solar asset stands as a legacy project that not only enhances UBD’s commitment to sustainability but also serves as a practical learning platform for students, researchers, and the wider community to engage with renewable energy technologies.
