Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) continues to advance community-focused sustainability initiatives through the UBD Sustainability Living Lab, bringing in international expertise to guide and strengthen local implementation.
In conjunction with InnovFest 2026, UBD hosted Ts. Dr Nor Azizi Yusoff, Senior Lecturer from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and Chairman of the Muar Living Lab, to share practical insights on implementing sustainable community development models.
During his visit, Dr Nor Azizi delivered a talk highlighting the Muar Living Lab experience, which has, since 2018, successfully brought together universities, government agencies, industries, and local communities to address real-world challenges through practical, community-driven solutions. His session emphasised the importance of starting small, building stakeholder confidence, and translating academic knowledge into tangible societal impact.
As part of the engagement, a visit to Kampong Bolkiah A provided an opportunity to contextualise these insights within UBD’s ongoing initiatives. The engagement helped refine key community challenges, identify priority areas for intervention, and shape potential pilot projects under the Kampong Bolkiah Living Lab.
This initiative, led by the UBD School of Business and Economics (SBE), is currently at a preliminary stage, building on earlier efforts focused on capacity building such as financial literacy and basic costing. Moving forward, the Living Lab aims to develop more holistic, scalable, and sustainable solutions to improve community livelihoods.
Dr Nor Azizi also highlighted the importance of inclusive stakeholder engagement and practical, ground-informed approaches to ensure that proposed solutions are relevant, implementable, and impactful.
This collaboration reflects UBD’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its Living Lab model by learning from proven practices and adapting them to the local context. Moving forward, UBD aims to design, implement, and scale impactful community-based solutions that contribute to long-term sustainable development in Brunei Darussalam.
