40 Professionals Trained to Tackle Psychosocial Risks at Work

A total of 40 professionals from Brunei Darussalam’s government and private sectors completed training in how to recognise, assess and manage psychosocial risks in the workplace, helping organisations address the causes of work-related stress before they harm people.

The two-day Psychosocial Trained Person (PTP) Workshop was held on 20th and 21st October 2026 at the Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Advancement (ILIA) Conference Room, ILIA Building, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). It was organised by UBD’s Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) in collaboration with the Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia.

Participants learned the psychosocial risk management approach, including the Psychosocial Risk Assessment and Management at the Workplace (PRisMA) 2024 guidelines. They practised identifying psychosocial hazards, evaluating workplace risks and choosing preventive and corrective actions. Practical exercises used the Likelihood of Environment and Occupational Exposure Scale towards Psychosocial Risk in the Workplace (LEO26) assessment tool, the Employer Practice Checklist (EPC23) and the Psychosocial Risk Intervention Matrix/Management Plan of Action (PRIMA) framework for developing risk management strategies. The training aims to certify participants as Psychosocial Trained Persons, equipped to support workplace psychosocial risk assessments, reporting and organisational action under the PRisMA framework.

Four UiTM academics facilitated the workshop: Dr Mohamad Ghazali Masuri, Associate Professor Dr Mohd Shukri Mohd Aris, Dr Ismaniza Ismail and Associate Professor Dr Khairil Anuar Md Isa. They guided participants through the principles, tools and practical application of workplace psychosocial risk management.

With participants from both government and private organisations, the workshop gave workplace safety and health practitioners, human resource professionals, occupational health personnel, managers and supervisors a chance to compare experiences of workplace stressors and organisational practices. They also discussed how to build psychosocial considerations into workplace safety and health systems. The skills gained also support the ongoing development of Brunei Darussalam’s draft Work-Life Balance Policy for All Workplaces.

The workshop reflects C3L’s commitment to industry-relevant lifelong learning, stronger university-industry partnerships and better professional competencies in workplace safety and health. It also lays the groundwork for future professional development initiatives and postgraduate micro-credential programmes in workplace psychosocial risk management.
