General Entry Requirements

  • The minimum requirement for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programme is normally a Master’s Degree in relevant discipline from institutions recognized by the University Senate unless otherwise stated.

  • The minimum requirement for Master Degree Programmes is normally a relevant Bachelor’s Degree with Honours (Second Class and above) or its equivalent from institutions recognised by the University Senate unless otherwise stated.

  • Applicants who do not possess a Second Class Honours Degree may be considered, provided they have relevant working experience and possess other academic or professional qualifications deemed suitable and equivalent for the purpose of admission to the programme.

  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate English language proficiency of at least grade C6 in English Language at GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations or a grade ‘B’ in IGCSE English (as a Second Language) or an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 or TOEFL PBT minimum overall score of at least 550, or Band B2 in UBD English Proficiency Test (UBD-EPT). Please take note that other specific entry requirements will be provided under the separate programmes. Note: TOEFL-ITP (Institutional TOEFL Program) is not accepted in UBD English language entry requirement

Duration of Study

  • Master by Coursework
    The period of study will be twelve (12) months full time or eighteen (18) months depending on the programme.

  • Master by Research
    The period of study will be twenty-four (24) months full-time.

  • Doctor of Philosophy
    The minimum period of study will be thirty-six (36) months full time or sixty (60) months part time depending on the programme.

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE)

PhD in Education

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A research proposal outlining the scope of work by independent research should be submitted. The proposal should include, but not be confined to: Introduction to the research topic; Research aims and objectives, including any working hypotheses if applicable; Literature review; Methodology, including any data requirements; Resource requirements, and; Timetable of work. The research proposal should be approximately 1,000 – 1,500 words in length.
  • Successful performance in an interview and any test required.

Start Date: January or August


Master of Education (By Research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • Evidence of Malay proficiency at the level of at least a credit in the GCE ‘O’ Level Malay Language applicable for applicants applying for Malay medium Master’s Degree programme.
  • A research proposal outlining the scope of work by independent research should be submitted. The proposal should include, but not be confined to: Introduction to subject; Research aims and objectives, including any working hypotheses if applicable; Literature review; Methodology, including any data requirements; Resource requirements, and; Timetable of work. The research proposal should be approximately 1,000 – 1,500 words in length.
  • Successful performance in an interview and any test required.

Start Date: January or August


Master of Education (By Coursework)

  • Evidence of Malay proficiency at the level of at least a credit in the GCE ‘O’ Level Malay Language applicable for applicants applying for Malay medium Master’s Degree programme.
  • Applicants are advised to write a short research proposal, which is normally expected to include the following: proposed title, rationale, aims and methodology, literature review, preliminary bibliography, provisional table of contents.
  • Successful performance in an interview and any test required .

Master of Teaching (By Coursework)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • For the Secondary and Vocational and Technical Education specialist stream, applicants’ undergraduate studies must be relevant to the choice of subject specialisation(s).
  • Successful performance in an interview and any test required.

Start Date: January (18 months)


Master in Counselling (By Coursework)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • Evidence of Malay proficiency at the level of at least a credit in the GCE ‘O’ Level Malay Language applicable for applicants applying for Malay medium specialisation.
  • Applicants are advised to write a short research proposal.
  • Successful performance in an interview and any test required.

Duration:

  • 1 year full-time for candidates with a Post-Graduate Diploma in counselling or its equivalent (commencing in January).
  • 1 ½ years full-time for candidates without a Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling or its equivalent (commencing in August).
  • 2 years part-time (commencing in January and August).

Start Date: January or August

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS)

PhD in Anthropology

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • Fluency in English, non-Malay speakers should acquire at least basic proficiency in Malay during their candidature.
  • A research proposal outlining the scope of work by independent research should be submitted. The proposal should include, but not be confined to: Introduction to subject; Research aims and objectives, including any working hypotheses if applicable; Literature review; Methodology, including any data requirements; Resource requirements, and; Timetable of work. The research proposal should be approximately 4,000 – 5,000 words (excluding initial bibliography).

PhD in Applied Linguistics

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Master’s degree in Linguistics or a relevant subject area.
  • Applications to the PhD programme must be accompanied by a detailed research proposal of approximately 4,000 – 5,000 words (excluding initial bibliography).

PhD in Art

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Master’s degree in Art or Master of Fine Arts degree or a relevant subject area.
  • Applications to the PhD in Art programme must be accompanied by a detailed research proposal of approximately 4,000 – 5,000 words (excluding initial bibliography).

PhD in English Literature

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Master’s degree in English Literature or a relevant subject area.
  • Applications to the PhD programme must be accompanied by a detailed research proposal of approximately 4,000 – 5,000 words (excluding initial bibliography).

PhD in Environmental Studies

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A research proposal outlining the scope of work by independent research should be submitted. The proposal should include, but not be confined to: Introduction to subject; Research aims and objectives, including any working hypotheses if applicable; Literature review; Methodology, including any data requirements; Resource requirements, and; Timetable of work. PhD in Geography

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A minimum second class undergraduate degree along with a Master’s degree in relevant subjects is required. Those holding a first class undergraduate degree in a relevant subject without a Master’s degree may also be considered.
  • A research proposal outlining the scope of work by independent research should be submitted. The proposal should include, but not be confined to: Introduction to subject; Research aims and objectives, including any working hypotheses if applicable; Literature review; Methodology, including any data requirements; Resource requirements, and; Timetable of work. The research proposal should be approximately 4,000 – 5,000 words (excluding initial bibliography).

PhD in History

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • Applicants must possess a Master Degree (with a CGPA equivalent to Upper Second Class Honours) in History from the Universiti Brunei Darussalam or from any other university recognised by Universiti Brunei Darussalam. Appropriate experience and publications may also be taken into account.
  • Fluent in English, Malay and/or any language related to the topic of the thesis chosen by a candidate.
  • A research proposal outlining the scope of work by independent research should be submitted. The proposal should include, but not be confined to: Introduction to subject; Research aims and objectives, including any working hypotheses if applicable; Literature review; Methodology, including any data requirements; Resource requirements, and; Timetable of work. The research proposal should be approximately 4,000 – 5,000 words (excluding initial bibliography).

PhD in Malay Language and Linguistics

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A candidate must possess a Master degree from the Universiti Brunei Darussalam or any other university recognised by the University, and he/she should have some background of research and/or writing on Malay linguistics.
  • Applicants who do not meet the above requirement may be considered, provided they possess other academic and/or professional qualifications in Malay linguistics. Appropriate experience and publications in Malay linguistics may also be taken into account.
  • Language requirement: Malay language. At least GCE ‘O” Level credit C6.
  • The research proposal should be approximately 4,000 – 5,000 words (excluding initial bibliography).

PhD in Malay Literature

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent from a recognised university or a professional qualification and/or relevant professional experience subject to the approval of the Senate. Appropriate experience and publications may also be taken into account.
  • Candidates have to write and submit the proposal of a topic from scopes of subject of Malay Literature or Culture or Language given.
  • Language requirement: Malay language.
  • The research proposal should be approximately 4,000 – 5,000 words (excluding initial bibliography).

PhD in Sociology

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Master’s degree in Professional Communication or a relevant subject area.

Master of Arts in English Language and Linguistics (By Research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Bachelor degree (first or second class Honours) in Linguistics or equivalent.

  • Applicants are required to submit a research proposal of approximately 3,000 – 4,000 words in length (excluding initial bibliography).

 

Master of Arts in English Literature (By Research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Bachelor degree (first or second class Honours) in Linguistics or equivalent.
  • Relevant working experience.

  • Applicants are required to submit a research proposal of approximately 3,000 – 4,000 words in length (excluding initial bibliography).

 

Master of Arts in Environmental Studies (By Research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • Language Requirements: English / Malay language
  • Sufficient prior background in History.
  • A minimum degree classification of Upper Second Class Honours.
  • Applicants are required to submit a research proposal of approximately 3,000 – 4,000 words (excluding initial bibliography).

 

Master of Arts in Malay Language and Linguistics (By Research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A candidate should have some background of research and/or writing on Malay linguistics.
  • Candidate applying for Master of Arts (Malay Language and Linguistics) by research must acquire a bachelor’s degree Second Class Upper
  • Applicants who do not meet the above requirement may be considered, provided they possess other academic and/or professional qualifications in Malay linguistics. Appropriate experience and publications in Malay linguistics may also be taken into account.
  • Language Requirement: Malay Language. At least GCE ‘O” Level credit C6.
  • Candidate must send a research proposal of approximately 3,000 – 4,000 words (excluding initial bibliography) by inserting the following:

Master of Arts in Malay Literature (By Research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • Candidates applying for Master of Arts (Malay Language and Linguistics) by research must acquire a bachelor’s degree second class upper. If the candidate obtained a second class lower can be considered to follow the Master by research with a conditions: (i) Experience writing Latihan Ilmiah. (ii) Produce/publish /write literary articles in internal and external magazines.
  • Applicants are required to write and submit the proposal of a topic from scopes of subject of Malay Literature or Culture or Language given.
  • Language Requirements: Malay Language.
  • Candidate must send a research proposal of approximately 3,000 – 4,000 words (excluding initial bibliography) by inserting the following:

  • At least a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) from a recognised university in a relevant discipline, including but not limited to: Physics, Chemistry and Materials Science.
  • In exceptional cases, subject to the relevant UBD regulations, an applicant with a First Class Honours Degree or equivalent qualifications from a recognised University will be considered as a PhD candidate.
  • Subject to the relevant UBD regulations, and depending on the merits of each case, MSc by Research candidate in a relevant field in UBD may be considered for conversion to PhD candidature. Shortlisted applicants may be interviewed on a case by case basis.

 

PhD in Biodiversity

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Biodiversity, Biology, Biological Sciences or closely related discipline from a recognised university, or
  • First class honours BSc degree in Biodiversity, Biology, Biological Sciences or closely related discipline from a recognised university;
  • Subject to the relevant UBD regulations, and depending on the merits of each case, an MSc by Research candidate in a relevant field in UBD may be considered for conversion to PhD candidature.

PhD in Biology

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry or closely related discipline from a recognised university
  • First class honours BSc degree in Chemistry closely related discipline from a recognised university.
  • Subject to the relevant UBD regulations, and depending on the merits of each case, an MSc by Research candidate in a relevant field in UBD may be considered for conversion to PhD candidature.
  • Shortlisted applicants may be interviewed on a case by case basis.

 

PhD in Computer Science

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • At least a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science from a recognised University. In exceptional cases, subject to the relevant UBD regulations, an applicant with First Class Honours Degree or equivalent qualifications from a recognised University will be considered as PhD candidate.
  • Subject to the relevant UBD regulations, and depending on the merits of each case, a MSc by Research candidate in a relevant field in UBD may be considered for conversion to PhD candidature.
  • Shortlisted applicants may be interviewed on a case by case basis.

 

PhD in Geosciences

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • At least a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Geology or a relevant area of Earth Sciences from a recognised University.
  • In exceptional cases, subject to the relevant UBD regulations, an applicant with First Class Honours Degree or equivalent qualifications from a recognised University will be considered as PhD candidate.
  • Subject to the relevant UBD regulations, and depending on the merits of each case, a MSc by Research candidate in a relevant field in UBD may be considered for conversion to PhD candidature.

PhD in Mathematics

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Mathematics or in a relevant area from a recognised university;
  • At least 2 publications in a reputable journal or equivalent work experience;

 

Master of Science in Applied Physics (By Research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • At least a Second Class (or equivalent) honours Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in a relevant discipline, including but not limited to: Physics, Chemistry and Materials Science.
  • Shortlisted applicants may be interviewed on a case by case basis.

 

Master of Science in Biodiversity (By Research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • At least a Second Class (or equivalent) honours Bachelor’s degree in Biodiversity, Biology, Biological Sciences or a relevant discipline from a recognised University.
  • Shortlisted applicants may be interviewed on a case by case basis.

 

Master of Science in Biology (By Research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • At least a Second Class (or equivalent) honours Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biological Sciences or a relevant discipline from a recognised University.

Master of Science in Biotechnology (By Research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • At least a Second Class (or equivalent) honours Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology or any related science field from a recognised University.
  • Shortlisted applicants may be interviewed on a case by case basis.

 

Master of Science in Chemistry (By Research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • At least a Second Class (or equivalent) honours Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in a relevant discipline preferably chemistry.
  • Shortlisted applicants may be interviewed on a case by case basis.

 

Master of Science in Computer Science (By Research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • At least a Second Class (or equivalent) honours Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from a recognised University.
  • Shortlisted applicants may be interviewed on a case by case basis.

 

Master of Science in Geosciences (By Research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • At least a Second Class (or equivalent) honours Bachelor’s degree in Geology or a relevant area of Earth Sciences from a recognised University.
  • Shortlisted applicants may be interviewed on a case by case basis.

 

Master of Science in Mathematics (By Research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • At least a lower second class (or equivalent) honours Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or Mathematics Education or in a relevant area from a recognised university.

 

Master of Science in Petroleum Geosciences (By Coursework) NEW

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • At least a Second Class Lower Bachelor Degree in Geology/Geophysics or equivalent Earth Science related or in other related discipline (Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science and Engineering) from a reputable university.
  • In addition to the General Entry Requirements, an IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL minimum overall score of at least 550 in paper based test (PBT), 60- 78 in internet-based test (IBT) and 183-210 in computer based test (CBT) or any other equivalent test score accepted by the original master by coursework in UBD.
  • Candidates fulfilling the entry requirement may be subject to interview.
  • Work experience in relevant field will also be taken into consideration.

UBD School of Business and Economics (UBDSBE)

PhD in Management

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Master degree in Business, Management or related area.
  • Applicants should also demonstrate an ability to do independent research.
  • Applicants must produce evidence of their English Language proficiency proven by at least a credit 5 English ‘O’ Level (or equivalent to 6.5 IELTS) for the PhD program, or 550 TOEFL for both programs.

Start Date: August and January each year.

 

PhD in Economics

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Master degree in Economics or related area.
  • Applicants should also demonstrate an ability to do independent research.
  • Applicants must produce evidence of their English Language proficiency proven by at least a credit 5 English ‘O’ Level (or equivalent to 6.5 IELTS) for the PhD program, or 550 TOEFL.

 

PhD in Finance

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Master degree in Finance, Business, Economics or related area.
  • Applicants should also demonstrate an ability to do independent research.
  • Applicants must produce evidence of their English Language proficiency proven by at least a credit 5 English ‘O’ Level (or equivalent to 6.5 IELTS) for the PhD program, or 550 TOEFL.

 

Master by Research

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with minimum of second class honours degree in related areas according to the programmes applied for (i.e. management, economics and finance), from Universiti Brunei Darussalam or a university or institution recognised by the Senate.
  • Applicants should also demonstrate an ability to do independent research.

 

Master of Business Administration (By Coursework)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with honours from Universiti Brunei Darussalam or a university or institution recognised by the Senate AND at least three years of working experience at executive or management level; or an equivalent professional qualification with at least three years of working experience at executive or management level.

 

Master of Applied Economics (By Coursework)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with honours in Economics or in a related discipline from Universiti Brunei Darussalam or a university or institution recognised by the Senate. However, subject to the possession of a bachelor’s degree, this condition could be relaxed for experienced applicants after determining that they possess the necessary skills to successfully complete the programme. No working experience is required.

 

Master of Logistics (By Coursework)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with minimum of second class honours degree in a related discipline from Universiti Brunei Darussalam or a university or institution recognised by the Senate. However, subject to the possession of a bachelor’s degree, this condition could be relaxed for experienced applicants after determining that they possess the necessary skills to successfully complete the programme; or
  • Academic or professional qualification with at least three years of working experience at executive or management level.

 

Master of Management (By Coursework)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with minimum of second class honours degree in relevant discipline from Universiti Brunei Darussalam or a university or institution recognised by the Senate.
  • No working experience is required.

 

Master of Islamic Finance (By Coursework)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with minimum of second class honours degree in relevant discipline from Universiti Brunei Darussalam or a university or institution recognised by the Senate.
  • No working experience is required.

PAPRSB Institute of Health Science (IHS)

PhD in Public Health

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline including medicine, nursing, health science, or other health or health-related discipline from a recognised university is the minimum academic qualification required for entry.
  • A First Class Honours degree or relevant qualifications from a recognised institution may be considered.
  • Short-listed candidates will be interviewed.

PhD in Midwifery

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Master’s degree in midwifery or in nursing with maternal and child health as specialisation is required. A candidate with a First Class Honours in midwifery or in nursing with adequate maternal and child health components in the curriculum may also be considered.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed.

PhD in Nursing

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • A Master’s degree in nursing is required. Candidates with a First Class Honours in nursing may also be considered.
  • Short-listed candidates will be interviewed.

PhD in Clinical Science

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • MBBS degree or equivalent with a relevant experience equivalent to a Master`s degree or Master’s degree in any health related discipline from a recognised institution.

  • A minimum of Second Class Honours in BHSc (Midwifery) or in a Bachelor’s degree in nursing with adequate maternal and child health component in the curriculum. Each candidate must have a license to practise through registration.

Master of Health Science in Nursing (By research)

Master of Health Science in Clinical Sciences (By research)

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • MBBS degree or equivalent, a first or an upper second class honour`s degree in any health related discipline, or other disciplines with strong interest or experience in health sciences from a recognised institution.

  • Provide a clear and detailed research proposal of about 2000 words that includes the research aims and objectives, literature review, methodology and, where relevant, a brief theoretical framework.
  • Final acceptance may be determined by interview.

Specific Entry Requirements:

  • Hold a Master’s Degree in an appropriate discipline from an institution recognized by the University. In exceptional cases, and subject to relevant UBD regulations, an applicant with a First Class Honours degree or its equivalent, or with extensive work experience from an institution recognized by UBD, may be admitted.
  • Must demonstrate sufficient background and experience in independent supervised research for postgraduate study.
  • Provide a clear and detailed research proposal of between 1,500 to 2,000 words. While any topic relating to Asian Studies will be considered, the Institute would like to encourage research in the following areas:
