The Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE), Universiti Brunei Darussalam, is undertaking a research project funded under grant UBD/RSCH/1.7/FICBF/2026/001 titled Understanding Youth Perspectives on Sustainability and Climate Change: A Comparative Study of Year 9 Students in Brunei Darussalam and Australia. Applications are invited for one (1) full-time Research Assistant position for a two-month appointment from 1 September to 31 October 2026, subject to a maximum of 44 working days in accordance with UBD research grant guidelines.
The Role
The Principal Investigator seeks candidates with a Master’s degree and strong experience in field-based research, preferably in school or educational settings. The successful candidate should demonstrate excellent communication and organisational skills, with the ability to coordinate with schools, negotiate suitable times for survey administration, conduct paper-based data collection across multiple schools, manage research logistics, and perform accurate data entry. As the project involves extensive fieldwork across secondary schools, candidates must be reliable, professional, and comfortable spending significant time on-site.
Minimum requirements:
- Master’s degree (minimum requirement)
- Experience in conducting fieldwork, preferably in schools or educational settings
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly when liaising with institutions
- Ability to coordinate schedules and negotiate arrangements with schools and teachers
- Experience administering surveys and handling paper-based data collection
- Experience with data entry, organisation, and maintaining accurate records
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple school visits
- Possesses a valid driving licence and reliable transport, as frequent travel to schools is required
- Strong organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines

- Aid in the preparation of Fin 2 forms, procurement documentation, and other research-related documents for the project.
- Assist in coordinating school visits, survey administration schedules, fieldwork logistics, and the organisation of research materials for data collection activities.
- Coordinate logistics for research activities, such as scheduling interviews, focus groups, and meetings.
- Conduct secondary data collection, such as reports and statistics, and manage the data.
- Assist in the recruitment of respondents and informants.
- Perform data entry tasks, including transcribing data.
- Support data entry, organisation, preliminary quantitative and qualitative analysis, and preparation of datasets for further analysis by the Principal Investigator.
- Support researcher in the preparation of manuscripts and materials related to publication.
