Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), marking a significant step forward in fostering digital innovation and sustainable economic growth in the ASEAN and East Asia region.
The signing ceremony, which was held on 28th May 2024, brought together two leading institutions committed to advancing knowledge, research, and development in the digital economy. Signing on behalf of UBD was Dr Hazri Haji Kifle, UBD Vice-Chancellor and signing on behalf of ERIA was Koji Hachiyama, ERIA Chief Operating Officer.
This MOU signifies a major milestone for UBD and Brunei Darussalam, enhancing the university’s visibility and standing in the international academic and research community. It underscores UBD’s commitment to driving forward-thinking initiatives that align with the national vision of sustainable development and economic diversification.
Under this MOU, UBD and ERIA will collaborate through the ERIA Digital Innovation and Sustainable Economy Centre (E-DISC), an open innovation platform inaugurated by ERIA in August 2023. The partnership will focus on several key areas which include Joint Research on Technology and Digital Innovation, Dissemination of Research Outcomes, Human Resource Development, Co-sponsorship and Co-hosting of Events, and Flexible Project-Based Cooperation.
UBD’s leadership in this collaboration underscores its strategic role in driving digital innovation and sustainability in Southeast Asia. By spearheading initiatives and research through this MOU, UBD will enhance its academic and research capabilities and will contribute significantly to Brunei Darussalam’s national development goals. This partnership highlights UBD’s dedication to fostering a dynamic environment where innovation thrives, benefiting both the University and the broader community.
