Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), through its Global Discovery Programme, on 12 June 2024, concludes the UBD-ASEAN University Network (AUN) Summer Camp 2024, themed “Green Horizons: Harnessing Digital Transformation for Biodiversity and Sustainable Development.” The closing ceremony took place in the Senate Room, Chancellor Hall, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, and marked the closing of a two-week programme participated by undergraduate students from over 21 universities across the ASEAN University Network (AUN) including Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
The closing ceremony was graced by Yang Mulia Puan Hajah Tutiaty Binti Haji Abdul Wahab, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, along with other guests, including Yang Mulia Dr Joyce Teo Siew Yean, Acting Vice Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Yang Mulia Puan Hajah Dahliana Binti Haji Aliakbar, Deputry Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, and representatives from the AUN Secretariat.
In his closing remarks, Yang Mulia Awang Jaini Bin Haji Jumat, Global Discovery Programme Coordinator, expressed his gratitude in the successful of the summer camp. He highlighted the programme’s comprehensive framework designed to elevate, transform, and inspire participants as agents of change.
Awang Jaini Bin Haji Jumat acknowledged the significant contributions of collaborators, including the Brunei SDG Unit and Green Brunei, and supporters such as the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the UBD Corporation Sdn. Bhd., and Aewon Brunei Yang Mulia Puan Hajah Tutiaty binti Haji Abdul Wahab, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism highlighted the importance of sustainability and digital transformation in today’s world, commending the students for their dedication and enthusiasm throughout the summer camp. Yang Mulia Puan Hajah Tutiaty Binti Haji Abdul Wahab also shared that “I would urge all of you be catalysts for change, supports for sustainability, and champions of a greener, more sustainable world. Together, we can drive significant change, inspire others to join our sustainability mission, and establish a legacy of environmental stewardship that echoes through time. Let’s work towards our sustainable future.”
The programme included a variety of activities such as student development workshop, table topic presentations, and a beach cleanup event, reflecting a strong commitment to environmental stewardship. Social activities and cultural field trips further enriched the participants’ experiences, fostering connections and unity among the ASEAN youth.
Participants shared their reflections on the summer camp, with two students highlighting the profound impact of the programme on their personal and academic growth. One student from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Dayang April Chooi, remarked, “This summer camp has been an eye-opening experience, inspiring me to found my own non-profit organisation back in my home country”. Another student, Dayang Kuroshini A/P Sathurugnan Saravanan added, “The diverse and enriching activities have motivated me to contribute more to the community. I am excited about the prospect of continuing my education at UBD.”
A special highlight of the programme was the Green Horizons Flower Planting Ceremony, where participants planted flowers at the UBD Campus, symbolising their shared commitment to sustainability and the lasting impact of the summer camp.
