The Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Library proudly hosted the official launch of its new Library System 2.0 on the morning of 24th September 2024. The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Vice Chancellor, Dr. Hazri bin Haji Kifle, as the guest of honour.
The new system, powered by KOHA and DSpace, marks a significant milestone in UBD Library’s ongoing efforts to improve service efficiency, sustainability, and user experience. KOHA, an open-source Integrated Library System (ILS), primarily manages the library’s Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), streamlining the discovery of resources for students and staff. Meanwhile, DSpace serves as the foundation for UBD Library’s new institutional repository, enhancing the accessibility and preservation of the university’s academic output. Together, these systems elevate both resource discovery and digital archiving capabilities, offering a more comprehensive and user-friendly library experience.
By adopting these open-source technologies, the library also contributes to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. The transition reduces annual maintenance costs, ensures perpetual licensing, and minimizes reliance on proprietary, resource-intensive solutions, allowing for more efficient use of resources. Key features of the project include data migration and the utilisation of new RFID technical equipment which includes an upgraded self-checkout machine and an automated book drop, among other technological advancements. These initiatives align with SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, as the library continues to evolve into a smarter, more resilient institution. UBD Library has been committed to automating its services since the launch of the VTLS Library System in 1997, followed by the e-Library@UBD project in 2007. The move to a cost-effective, vendor-independent solution highlights the university’s commitment to sustainable innovation.
The signing of the project agreement between UBD and Alif Technologies on 7th August 2023 marked the beginning of a promising collaboration to advance the university’s library services. By integrating open-source software and sustainable practices, the library is shaping an eco-friendly and technologically robust future for the academic community.
To celebrate the launch, the library is hosting a range of public activities from 24th to 27th September 2024 at the UBD Library, including a book fair, F&B and product stalls, a blood donation drive, and health screening services.
