Two teams from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) secured top positions at the Brunei Petroleum Technology Exhibition and Conference (PTEC) 2025 Hackathon, held at the International Convention Centre (ICC).
Out of over 70 participants, including students and industry professionals, Perunding AI clinched first place. This prototype, presented by four undergraduates from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS)—Abdul Rasyid Ja’afar, Md Saifullah Qawiem Md Sukri, Md Hamizan Misli, Awangku Amir Hadi Pengiran A’zrin—and one from the Universiti Brunei Darussalam School of Business and Economics (UBDSBE), Muhammad Al-Warith Buhairi, is a centralised platform for oil and gas companies to trade surplus inventory. It features expert consulting services, advanced inventory management tools, and a seamless tracking system to streamline operations and maximise efficiency.
Flare Co took second place with an application system that predicts current and future oil well conditions, centralising data to deliver precise insights for smarter, data-informed decision-making. The team consisted of five undergraduates from FASS—Muhd Nursyazwi Shahrudin, Haji Muhammad Haziq Haji Serkan, Nathaniel Chong Ze Shen, Siti Nur’Fateen Syazwani Yati Sohartyman, Nuradinda Ihti Fatisha Md Pisal—and one from the Faculty of Science (FOS), Dexter Poh Tzisiang.
The participating UBD undergraduates are part of the Incubation programme during their Discovery Year, an experiential learning initiative that allows them to expand their skills and knowledge beyond the campus. This programme provides a platform for students to develop entrepreneurial skills and foster innovation.
The Hackathon is a key component of PTEC 2025’s mission to promote “Innovation for Efficiency and Sustainability in the Hydrocarbon Industry.” It serves as a dynamic platform for fostering innovation and creativity, specifically aimed at addressing the critical challenges facing the oil and gas industry. By bringing together diverse talents and perspectives, with guidance from experienced industry and business leaders, the competition seeks to generate novel solutions and ideas that could potentially transform the sector.
This initiative was jointly powered by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Brunei and the Brunei Innovation Lab (BIL).
