Brunei Youth Empowered with Data Analytics Skills Through ASEAN Data Science Explorers Enablement Session 2025

Over 60 youth from across Brunei Darussalam participated in the ASEAN Data Science Explorers (ASEAN DSE) Enablement Session for Youth 2025, held at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), highlighting the university’s continuous efforts in advancing digital education and inclusivity in line with the ASEAN and global development agenda.

The event took place at the Lecture Theatre 2, Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS) Extension Building, and was supported by the Faculty of Integrated Technologies (FIT). UBD Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Sustainability) Dr. Haji Abdul Hanif bin Dato Paduka Haji Mahadi was present as the guest of honour.

The event featured a hands-on enablement session using SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC), where youth participants were introduced to data analytics fundamentals through practical exercises. Facilitated by certified trainers Awang Muhammad Yusuf Ashraf Muhamad Yusran and Dayang Aunizafirah Batrisyia binti Agus Zamri, the session aimed to strengthen the participants’ capabilities in data-driven thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills—essential tools in the era of digital transformation.

Dean of the Faculty of Integrated Technologies (FIT) Dr Juliana Haji Zaini highlighted in her welcoming remarks the significance of the enablement session, stating: “Today’s programme represents a strategic commitment to bridging the digital divide by equipping young people—including those from underserved backgrounds—with the tools they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital economy. It is a clear demonstration of the power of collaboration between academic institutions, international organisations, and the private sector to invest in the next generation of ASEAN leaders.

The ASEAN DSE programme, a collaboration between the ASEAN Foundation and SAP, is a regional flagship initiative that champions youth empowerment and inclusive digital access. This year’s focus on underserved and underrepresented groups, such as youth from rural areas and lower socio-economic backgrounds, emphasises the commitment to bridging the digital divide across ASEAN Member States.

The session also aligns with UBD’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in promoting Quality Education (SDG 4), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), and Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8). Through events like this, UBD continues to drive impactful initiatives that prepare youth for an inclusive, sustainable digital future.
