The Universiti Brunei Darussalam School of Business and Economics (UBDSBE) commemorated Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) 40th anniversary with its UBDSBE Alumni Gala Night under the theme ‘Legacy for Our Community: Honouring the Past and Shaping the Future’ on 9th July 2025.
The event brought together alumni, faculty members, and former deans from UBDSBE, Faculty of Business, Economics and Policy (FBEPS), and Faculty of Management and Admnistrative studies (FMAS) to celebrate the School’s achievements and reconnect with the university community.
In her speech, Dr Wardah Azimah Sumardi, Dean of UBDSBE, reflected on the School’s journey of growth and transformation into a globally recognised institution. She highlighted key milestones, including international accreditations such as Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), growing global visibility through strategic partnerships with bodies like Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA) and Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), and active participation in networks such as the Principles for Responsible Management Education and the Babson Collaborative for Entrepreneurship Education, all demonstrating the School’s commitment to responsible leadership, academic excellence, and global engagement.
She also encouraged the active establishment of a UBDSBE Alumni Society, a dynamic platform for graduates to reconnect, strengthen professional networks, and contribute meaningfully to both the School and UBD through ongoing mentorship, knowledge exchange, and collaboration.
Allen Lai, a newly appointed UBD Council Member and UBDSBE alumnus, also shared his personal reflections on the formative years at UBD. He described his time at UBD as “deeply experimental and influential”, enabling him to explore his interests and shape his professional path. He highlighted that beyond academic excellence, it was the combination of meaningful university experiences and active participation in extracurricular activities that enriched his journey and left a lasting impact.
The Gala Night not only celebrated UBDSBE’s legacy but also served as a meaningful call for deeper alumni engagement, inspiring future collaboration and continued contributions to the growth of the School and the university at large. In line with UBDSBE’s broader ethos of social responsibility, a portion of the event contributions has been set aside to support community initiatives, reflecting a shared commitment to giving back and making a positive impact beyond campus.
