UBD Joins AUN Leaders to Discuss Future of ASEAN Universities

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Vice-Chancellor Dr Hazri Haji Kifle attended the 16th ASEAN University Network (AUN) Rectors’ Meeting and 40th AUN-Board of Trustees (AUN-BOT) Meeting held in Manila, Philippines, from 24th to 25th July 2025.

Co-hosted by De La Salle University and the University of the Philippines, the meetings focused on the theme ‘From Networks to Impact: The Future of Global Higher Education’, emphasizing the importance of multilateral alliances and sustainable international collaboration. UBD’s engagement in these discussions opens doors for new joint research initiatives, student and faculty exchanges, and collaborative programs with other ASEAN universities.

Dr Hazri spoke in ‘Session 1: Transforming Societies: Universities Driving Impact Through Multilateral Alliances’ during the 16th AUN Rectors’ Meeting. He highlighted the unique role universities play in driving societal change. His presentation emphasised that universities are well-positioned to contribute significantly to addressing global challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and technological disruptions through interdisciplinary and inclusive approaches.

Dr Hazri’s participation alongside other university leaders from ASEAN member states positioned UBD as an active contributor to shaping the future of higher education in Southeast Asia. His involvement in panel discussions and strategic dialogues helped reinforce UBD’s commitment to regional collaboration and academic excellence.

The UBD delegation also comprised UBD Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement) Dr Joyce Teo Siew Yean and Director of Innovation in Teaching and Learning Centre (InTELECT).

The meetings aligned with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). UBD’s active participation advances its strategic goals of enhancing educational quality and fostering impactful, sustainable partnerships.
