Six months after celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Southeast Asia: A Multidisciplinary Journal (SEAMJ) has reached a significant milestone — acceptance for indexing in Scopus, one of the world’s largest abstract and citation databases for peer-reviewed literature.
SEAMJ is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal that publishes high-quality theoretical, analytical, and empirical research on the languages and cultures of contemporary Southeast Asian societies. Its scope includes topics such as: Language, culture, and society in the Malay world; Youth culture and social media; Digital development; Sustainable urbanisation in Southeast Asia; Globalisation and security; and Migration among others.
While the journal maintains a strong regional focus on Southeast Asia, it also welcomes submissions with broader relevance and significant implications for the region. SEAMJ aims to be a leading platform for original and groundbreaking research, serving both regional and global readerships. As a bilingual journal, it publishes articles in both Malay and English.
Originally published annually by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), SEAMJ transitioned to online publishing in 2010 and began triannual publication with Emerald Publishing in 2022.
Being indexed in Scopus signifies that SEAMJ meets rigorous standards of quality, peer review, and editorial excellence, as assessed by the Scopus Content Selection and Advisory Board. This recognition enhances the journal’s visibility, credibility, and discoverability, making it more attractive to researchers, institutions, and funding agencies. This achievement marks a major milestone for SEAMJ, affirming its academic impact and placing it firmly on the global research map.
Dean of FASS Dr Asiyah az-Zahra Ahmad Kumpoh shared that “the journey to Scopus indexing was neither quick nor easy and it reminds us of the quiet strength that comes from trusting the process and staying committed, even when challenges and setbacks could have easily thrown us off track.”
“My deepest gratitude goes out to Professor Dr AKM Ahsan Ullah for his excellent leadership and the dedicated support of his team,” she added. “My sincere appreciation also goes out to the two former Deans of FASS, Professor Dr Haji Noor Azam Orang Kaya Maha Bijaya (OKMB) Haji Othman and Dr Kathrina Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Daud, for their continued support throughout SEAMJ’s development, as well as Research Assistant Diyana Alipah and Dr Hajah Sharifah Nurul Huda Alkaff for their tireless work behind the scenes.”
SEAMJ’s current Chief Editor, Professor Dr AKM Ahsan Ullah expressed how it was an immense joy to share the exciting news. “On behalf of the SEAMJ team, I would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations and sincere gratitude to all our colleagues, contributors, reviewers, and esteemed members of the editorial board,” he said. “This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without your unwavering support, dedication, and scholarly contributions. Let us celebrate this collective success and continue working together to elevate SEAMJ’s impact in the field SEAMJ represents.”
