BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – Four exceptional students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) were awarded the prestigious Chancellor’s Scholar UBD scholarships for the 2025/2026 academic session to pursue their Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.
His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, consented to award the scholarships to Nurul Hazirah Haji Zainuddin, Nur Nawwarah Hairul Azmi, Awangku Ahmad Zawawi Pengiran Haji Asmali, and Ahmad Zakwan Haji Mohd Salleh.
The signing of the agreement with the Government of His Majesty and the award ceremony took place on 30th September 2025 at the Auditorium Hall, Legislative Council Building.
The guest of honour at the event was Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah Haji Mohd Salleh, Minister of Education, Brunei Darussalam. Signing on behalf of UBD was Dr Hazri Haji Kifle, Vice-Chancellor of UBD. Also in attendance were Dr Haji Azman Ahmad, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education), Ministry of Education; Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati Haji Tajuddin, Permanent Secretary (Core Education), Ministry of Education; Heads of Departments; and officers from the Ministry of Education.
Nurul Hazirah will pursue her PhD in Human Geography at the University of Bristol, United Kingdom (UK). Awangku Ahmad Zawawi will undertake his PhD in History and Malay Studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS), while Ahmad Zakwan will pursue his PhD in Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Meanwhile, Nur Nawwarah will undertake her Master of Research in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at University College London, UK.
Upon completion of their studies, the scholars will be placed at UBD as educators, where they will share their expertise and experiences with students and staff. They are expected to contribute as academics, researchers, and future leaders, managers, and planners of UBD.
