The Universiti Brunei Darussalam Botanical Research Centre (UBD BRC), under the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER), in collaboration with Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn. Bhd. (BSP) successfully organised a Tree Planting at the UBD Botanical Research Centre on 27th November 2025. The initiative forms part of BSP’s ongoing environmental and social investment commitments and UBD’s broader sustainability and biodiversity enhancement efforts.
The welcoming remarks was delivered by Associate Professor Dr. Rahayu Sukmaria Hj Sukri, Curator of UBD BRC. The event brought together 50 participants comprising 25 BSP staff and 25 representatives from IBER and UBD. A total of 50 saplings of native tree species were planted within the UBD BRC. The saplings planted were native Brunei species selected for their ecological and conservation significance. The initiative aims to contribute to ex-situ conservation efforts, enhance the diversity of living collections within UBD BRC, and expands campus green spaces.
Through this activity, BSP staff gained hands-on experience in tree planting and conservation practices, reflecting the company’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. The collaboration between BSP and IBER demonstrates how partnerships between academia and industry can contribute m
eaningfully to Brunei Darussalam’s National Climate Change Policy and sustainability goals. The event also provides an opportunity for informal exchanges between BSP and IBER staff to strengthen collaboration on future environmental initiatives. This initiative also supports UBD’s Rooting for the Future campaign under its 40th Anniversary celebrations, as well as the UBD Campus Greening Project, which promotes native biodiversity enhancement and carbon sequestration within the campus environment.
The tree planting at UBD BRC signifies a shared vision between UBD and BSP to promote environmental awareness, biodiversity conservation, and climate action for a greener, more sustainable Brunei Darussalam.
