Graduates of Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) General Engineering programme will continue to hold a qualification recognised around the world, after the Faculty of Integrated Technologies (FIT) successfully renewed its accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the United States-based body that sets the global benchmark for engineering education.
The renewal means the programme, first accredited in October 2017 as the only one of its kind in Brunei Darussalam and among a small number across ASEAN to hold ABET status, has once again been judged to meet the rigorous international standards required to prepare graduates for careers as professional engineers, including eligibility that supports mobility and licensure in markets that recognise ABET accreditation.
To earn the renewal, FIT underwent a comprehensive review covering its curriculum, staff, facilities and institutional support, as well as the overall student learning experience, an assessment designed to confirm that graduates are equipped for critical technical fields, innovation and emerging technologies.
Dean of FIT Dr Juliana Haji Zaini said the achievement reflects sustained effort rather than a one-time result. “Alhamdulillah, the continuation of ABET accreditation for our General Engineering programme is another significant milestone for FIT and UBD,” she said.
“More importantly, it demonstrates that the quality of our engineering education has been continually maintained and strengthened since our first accreditation. This achievement is the result of the collective commitment and dedication of our academic and non-academic staff, students, alumni, industry partners and stakeholders, together with the strong support of the University.”
“Accreditation is not an endpoint,” she added. “It is an ongoing commitment to continuous improvement and to ensuring that our graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills and professional attributes required of engineers in an increasingly complex and rapidly evolving world. FIT will continue to strengthen and transform its engineering curriculum to remain relevant to emerging technologies, industry needs and the future development of Brunei Darussalam.”
Established in 2012, FIT has since produced more than 100 engineering graduates through a General Engineering programme built around broad-based, design-centred training, with concentrations in Energy Systems, Information and Communications Systems, and Manufacturing Systems. Alongside technical instruction, the Faculty has placed sustained emphasis on the personal and professional development of its students.
The renewed accreditation reinforces UBD’s broader commitment to internationally benchmarked engineering education, and to producing graduates equipped to contribute to industry, technological advancement and Brunei Darussalam’s national development.
