Committed to providing world-class education to its students, much of UBD’s activities were centered around building innovative research capacity and nurturing young leaders of tomorrow through human resources development (curriculum development), and exchange of expertise and experience between institutions.
In the 2015 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings, UBD was ranked the 118th top university in Asia. The success can be attributed to UBD’s core value in teaching with continuing focus on nurturing innovative and entrepreneurial graduates who will contribute to the development of the economy and nation. The university actively expands the learning environment for its students through partnerships with local and international industry players and upgrading its teaching and research infrastructure.
Through its capacity building schemes, UBD dedicates itself to training young academics and leaders to become erudite, innovative and self-sustainable individuals. It strongly supports the continual professional development of its staff through a network of mentorship and professional training in order to hone and sharpen their academic performance.
Additionally, the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) was set up to provide training in teaching pedagogy for its staff, especially young academics. Besides regular workshops , the Centre offers programmes in curriculum development, online assessment and e-learning, among others. A mentorship scheme is also established to allow young academics to learn and grown with a seasoned lecturer to expand their knowledge in teaching as well as their research areas.
UBD also signs “star” professors – world-renowned experts in their respective academic fields – through the Eminent Visiting Professorship and Visiting Appointment (EVPVA) scheme to boos the quality of research and teaching in the university. The eminent visiting professors’ (EVO) involvement has resulted in a capacity building for young Bruneian staff, lectures by world class experts, and identification of new research areas and opportunities.
UBD often hosts public lectures by its EVPs to allow students, young academics and members of the public to engage in a productive discussion with these highly distinguished professors. The “star” professors also teach in both undergraduate and graduate programmes in UBD.
