The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is conducting research on ‘Language Use in Brunei Secondary School Content Classrooms’. This research project investigates how language is being used in the classroom by teachers and learners in the four principal domains of instructional talk, management talk, task talk and social talk. The key aspects in classroom discourse that will be focused on include use of the L1 (if any) and the nature of English language use and for what purposes (translanguaging, code-switching, use of translation); and by whom (mainly through speech act identification from transcription); and its relation to teaching/learning objectives. We seek to hire one part-time Research Assistant for a period of six months starting from 1st March 2025.


The Role

The candidate must be available to work up to the equivalent of 43 days spread over the research period of six months. The position will include the tasks such as conducting literature search; transcription of data from audio and video recordings in a timely manner; translation of Malay language data into English, and translation of other research documents from Malay into English; data coding for qualitative analysis; referencing and proof-reading; attending planning sessions and training sessions in data coding; self-study on use of qualitative research software; and other research related tasks as directed by the researcher.


Requirements:

  1. A higher degree (Masters or above) in linguistics.
  2. Bruneian citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Academic background in discourse analysis, pragmatics, and conversation analysis.
  4. Fluent in Malay (Brunei and Standard Malay) and English.
  5. Excellent language awareness and written and spoken communication
  6. Experience in translation (Malay <-> English).
  7. Computer literate (MS Word) and able to learn how to use qualitative analysis
  8. Able to keep to strict deadlines and complete tasks in a timely
  9. High level of language accuracy and quality of work
  10. Able to work independently to achieve research
  11. Basic competence in handling recording and other
