His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, has consented to award the Chancellor’s Scholar for the academic session 2024/2025 to one outstanding student.
The signing and award ceremony for the Chancellor’s Scholar 2024/2025 was held on Thursday, 24th September 2024 at Ruang Bicara Minda, UBD Library, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
The Guest of Honor, Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah Haji Mohd Salleh, Minister of Education presented the award certificate to the recipient, Dayangku Siti Nurkhairina binti Pengiran Metusin. Also present was Dr Chin Wei Keh, Acting Permanent Secretary Higher Education and Dr Hazri Haji Kifle, Vice-Chancellor of UBD.
Signing on behalf of UBD was Dr Hazri Haji Kifle, Vice- Chancellor of UBD, with the Guest of Honour, The Honourable Minister of Education as the witness, for the Chancellor’s Scholar recipient who will be pursuing a career as a university academic at UBD upon completion of her studies.
Dayangku Siti Nurkhairina binti Pengiran Metusin is a First Class Honours graduate from Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali with a Bachelor of Usuluddin majoring in Tafsir and Hadith and minoring in Information and Communication Technology. She also holds a Master of Usuluddin with Distinction where her research focus was on Tafsir and its development in Brunei Darussalam. She has leadership experience as the Vice-President II of the UNISSA Student Council (2017/2018) and has led various other student development programmes under the Student Council.
Dayangku Siti Nurkhairina will be pursuing a PhD in Quranic Exegesis (Tafsir) and Sciences (Ulum Al-Quran) focusing on mental health at the University of Jordan. Her chosen field is relevant to UBD and she will be able to contribute in the area of contemporary Islam at the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Centre for Islamic Studies, UBD.
The Chancellor’s Scholar is a prestigious scholarship awarded annually to the country’s outstanding youths with a genuine interest in pursuing a career in academia at UBD. The holders of this Scholarship will receive exemplary education at the graduate level, up to a PhD at first-class universities worldwide. Scholars of a high calibre will be nurtured with personal development programmes, mentorship, and placements with academics at UBD and overseas institutions and contribute as academics and researchers as well as future leaders, managers and planners of UBD.
The Chancellor’s Scholar was first introduced in 2012. To date, 15 students have received the coveted Chancellor’s Scholar.
