UBD Hosts National Workshop to Shape ASEAN Climate Strategy

Brunei Darussalam held its National Workshop on the ASEAN Climate Change Strategic Action Plan (ACCSAP) 2025–2030, hosted by Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) on 23rd June 2025.

The event brought together representatives from government, the private sector, academia, NGOs and civil society to help shape Brunei’s national input into ASEAN’s next five-year regional climate framework.

The ACCSAP 2025–2030 outlines 34 Strategic Action Areas across three key pillars: adaptation, mitigation and cross-cutting issues such as finance, governance, education and inclusion. It aims to align regional action on climate change with national priorities and realities across ASEAN Member States.

As Brunei Darussalam’s appointed National Think Tank, UBD is coordinating a two-phase stakeholder engagement process, consisting of data collection and national workshop, to ensure broad, evidence-based input informs Brunei Darussalam’s official contribution and priorities. Findings will be compiled into a National Report for submission to the ACCSAP Secretariat, led by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), in collaboration with the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC) and the ASEAN Working Group on Climate Change (AWGCC).

Dr Haji Abdul Hanif Dato Paduka Haji Mahadi, UBD Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Sustainability) stressed in his opening remarks the importance of inclusive dialogue. “This workshop is a vital step in ensuring Brunei Darussalam’s climate priorities are reflected in ASEAN’s collective agenda. By drawing from diverse perspectives, we strengthen our shared commitment to a resilient and economically thriving region.”

The consultation process supports Brunei Darussalam’s broader climate commitments, including Wawasan Brunei 2035, Brunei National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP) and the Brunei’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). It also seeks to identify gaps, strengthen policy coherence and build momentum for regional cooperation through mechanisms such as the ASEAN Centre for Climate Change (ACCC).

The workshop reaffirms Brunei’s role in advancing ASEAN climate leadership and ensuring that national perspectives drive a sustainable and inclusive regional response.
