The UBD Botanical Research Centre (UBD BRC), under the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER), successfully launched its new outreach programme, “Leaf to Life: Connecting People, Plants, and Climate Resilience”, on 14 June 2026. The initiative was held in conjunction with the International Day of Education in Botanic Gardens and supported by a grant from Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI).
Designed to promote awareness of Brunei’s native plants and their role in climate resilience, the programme brought together 24 participants from diverse backgrounds for its inaugural session. Through a hands-on botanizing approach led by Mr. Amiruddin Ruslan and Mr. Soon Boon Yu, participants explored the UBD BRC’s living plant collections, while learning about their ecological importance and adaptive responses to environmental change. The programme also featured a talk on Climate Change and Plant Adaptation by Ms Hazimah Din. Participants then took part in an interactive plant treasure hunt, enhancing their understanding through experiential learning.
As part of the International Day of Education in Botanic Garden event, visitors to the UBD BRC further engaged in an immersive UBD Campus Nature Walk led by Dr Salwana Md Jaafar, offering deeper insights into the campus’ rich biodiversity.
Two additional Leaf to Life sessions are scheduled for August and October 2026, continuing the UBD BRC’s commitment to advancing environmental education and community engagement in biodiversity conservation.
