Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) contributed to national dialogue on artificial intelligence (AI) readiness through a keynote address by Hajah Maudena Haji Abd Hamid, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (University Life and Governance), at the AI Ready ASEAN Brunei Darussalam National Policy Convening.
The convening, themed “Strengthening AI Readiness Across Sectors: From Awareness to Action,” served as a national platform for dialogue on strengthening AI readiness in Brunei Darussalam. It brought together approximately 60 participants representing government ministries and agencies, universities, industry, civil society and the education sector to exchange perspectives on AI literacy, responsible AI governance and digital inclusion.
The keynote address titled “Rediscovering the Purpose of Higher Education in the Age of AI” was delivered at the Function Room, An-Naura Hall, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex, Bandar Seri Begawan.
In her keynote address, Hajah Maudena reflected on the evolving role of higher education amid the rapid advancement of AI. She emphasised that while AI continues to transform learning and access to knowledge, universities remain integral to human development and to preparing learners with the skills and qualities required to navigate an increasingly AI-driven future.
She also highlighted the importance of critical thinking, sound judgement, resilience, adaptability and creativity, alongside responsible AI use. Her address further underscored the importance of responsible governance, transparency, privacy, fairness and human oversight in fostering trust in AI.
The event also featured panel discussions and focus group sessions on multi-stakeholder collaboration, AI readiness, responsible AI governance, ethics, misinformation and public trust, concluding with key recommendations and the way forward.
