Counselling Services

Mental health and emotional wellbeing are essential foundations for academic success, workplace performance, healthy relationships, and overall quality of life. Personal, academic, professional, and social challenges can affect how you think, feel, and function day to day — and seeking support early can help prevent difficulties from escalating.

Our counselling services are open to all UBD students and staff, offering a safe, supportive space to talk through personal concerns, emotional difficulties, life challenges, or mental health issues, with a qualified counsellor bound by professional and ethical standards.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is a core principle of our service. What you share in session is treated with the utmost discretion and will not be disclosed without your consent — except where legal, ethical, or safeguarding responsibilities require action to address a serious risk of harm.

OUR APPROACH

We take a person-centred, non-judgemental approach — built on trust and tailored to you, not a fixed programme. Our counsellors draw on several evidence-informed methods:

  • Gestalt therapy — focusing on present-moment awareness and how you experience things right now
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) — working with the link between thoughts, feelings, and behaviour
  • Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) — practical tools for shifting unhelpful patterns
  • Humanistic approaches — centring your own values, choices, and sense of self

Rather than treating a single problem, we work with the whole person — combining cognitive reframing, emotional awareness, and present-moment experience to help you build self-understanding and make choices that feel right for you.

ISSUES THAT WE CAN EXPLORE TOGETHER

  • Depression, anxiety, stress
  • Loss and bereavement
  • Panic attacks
  • Relationship issues
  • Substance and behavioural addiction
  • Low self-esteem
  • Psychological disorders
  • Mental, verbal, or physical abuse or neglect
  • Any other issue affecting your daily life or routine

Seeking support is a sign of strength. Whether you’re a student navigating academic and personal challenges, or a staff member managing workplace, family, or life demands — support is available, and you don’t have to face it alone.
