Inclusive Support and Accessibility Services

Inclusive Support and Accessibility Services, under the Centre for University Life and Wellness, supports UBD’s commitment to creating an inclusive, accessible, safe, and supportive university environment for all members of the university community. The service is available to students as well as academic, administrative, and support staff, ensuring that individuals can access appropriate guidance, support, and reasonable adjustments to participate fully in university life.

The Unit works closely with students, academic staff, administrative staff, and relevant university stakeholders to identify barriers, coordinate support, and promote equitable access to learning, work, and campus life.

What Is Inclusive Support and Accessibility?

Inclusive Support and Accessibility recognises that some students and staff may experience temporary or permanent barriers that affect their learning, work, participation, wellbeing, or access to university services.

These barriers may relate to:

  • Medical conditions, such as epilepsy, asthma, chronic illness, injury, or recovery after treatment.
  • Psychological or emotional concerns, including stress, anxiety, depression, or trauma-related challenges.
  • Sensory conditions, including visual or hearing impairments.
  • Physical or mobility-related conditions.
  • Cognitive or learning-related needs.
  • Learning disabilities, including dyslexia.
  • Autism spectrum conditions, including Asperger syndrome.
  • Giftedness, exceptional abilities, or other circumstances requiring tailored academic support.

Inclusive support is not limited to disability. It includes any condition, need, or circumstance that may affect equal participation and may require reasonable adjustments, guidance, referral, or coordinated support.

OUR COMMITMENT

Inclusive Support and Accessibility Services is committed to:

  • Supporting the physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and academic development of students.
  • Supporting staff in creating and sustaining inclusive learning and working environments.
  • Promoting full participation in academic, professional, and campus life.
  • Respecting dignity, rights, privacy, and confidentiality.
  • Encouraging early identification of support needs.
  • Providing practical guidance, reasonable adjustments, and coordinated support.
  • Raising awareness of accessibility, inclusion, disability support, and wellbeing.
  • Strengthening collaboration across academic and non-academic departments.
  • Ensuring that students and staff are connected with appropriate university or external support services when needed.

Alignment with SDG 4: Quality Education

Inclusive Support and Accessibility Services contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all. By identifying barriers, supporting reasonable adjustments, and strengthening inclusive practices, the Unit helps ensure that students and staff (academic and non-academic) have fair opportunities to access education, employment, services, and meaningful participation within the UBD community. Through a whole-university approach, the Unit supports individuals in achieving their full potential while fostering an inclusive, accessible, and supportive environment for all.

Our Role

Inclusive Support and Accessibility Officers serve as a point of guidance, coordination, and advocacy for inclusive practices across the university.

Our role includes:

  • Identifying individual support and accessibility needs of students and staff.
  • Coordinating academic, workplace, and non-academic support arrangements.
  • Advising students, academic staff, non-academic staff, managers, and departments on reasonable adjustments.
  • Supporting communication between students, staff, lecturers, supervisors, administrators, and relevant service units.
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential support records.
  • Monitoring support arrangements and reviewing their effectiveness where appropriate.
  • Promoting inclusive practices in teaching, learning, research, administration, employment, and campus services.
  • Referring individuals to internal services, external agencies, or specialist support when required.
  • Supporting institutional initiatives related to accessibility, inclusion, equity, and wellbeing.
  • Providing guidance on the development and implementation of Inclusive Support Plans (ISPs) and Workplace Support Plans (WSPs).
  • Contributing to awareness, training, and capacity-building initiatives that promote accessibility and inclusive culture across the university.

This approach ensures that accessibility and inclusion are embedded not only in the student experience but also in the workplace experiences of academic and non-academic staff throughout UBD.

WHO CAN ACCESS OUR SERVICES?

Our services are open to all UBD students and staff, including academic, administrative and support staff, who need assistance with accessibility, inclusion, wellbeing, learning or participation in university and workplace activities.
