A team from the PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences (IHS) led by Dr Hjh Asmah binti Haji Husaini participated in the CIPTA Awards competition 2023 themed ‘ Innovation for Sustainable Development Goals. The team included Dr Owais Ahmed Malik, Dr Ong Wee Hong , undergraduate student Ahmad Syahmi Md Zaini from the School of Digital Science, post-graduate Student in Master of Health Sciences in Clinical Science (By Research) Dk Hjh Zatil Pg Hj Suffian from the PAPRSB IHS.
They presented their project “An AI enabled home-based physical exercise and monitoring system- ‘Be-Live Remote Rehab System” at the final judging round. A total of 68 projects were submitted to the competition and 48 progressed to the final judging round. The team won the consolation price of $500 cash and certificates which was presented by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office.
The team’s project titled “An AI enabled home-based physical exercise and monitoring system- ‘Be-Live Remote Rehab System” allows physical exercises that are clinically prescribed by the physiotherapists to patients with musculoskeletal system problem to be carried out at home. This project was submitted to the Category 2: Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology.
The AI system would be able to assist the physiotherapist to monitor the patients’ performance at home, and would general new sets of exercises according to patients’ progress. These new sets of exercise will be assessed and endorsed by the physiotherapists before prescribing them to patients.
This system allows the inclusion of patients who require minimal supervision to carry out their exercises at home to be monitored continuously until they are fully rehabilitated.
