Three significant scientific studies led by researchers from the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Ministry of Health (MOH), and Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC), were published in the prestigious Lancet journal series.
These collaborative efforts involved scientists from 21 countries including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. The research projects were led by Dr Ong Sok King, Adjunct Professor at UBD’s Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS) who is also a Consultant (Public Health) at MOH and Visiting Consultant to TBCC, PJSC.
The studies provide a detailed picture of cancer burden and risk profile in Asia, particularly for the development of Asia codes against cancer, elimination of cervical cancer, and breast cancer prevention and control. These were accomplished through collaboration with scientists from different faculties in UBD, MOH, PJSC, and overseas research networks including the National University of Singapore (NUS) and World Health Organisation (WHO). As a result of the studies, key cancer preventive messages were highlighted for the Asian population.
The papers addressing codes against cancer, regional efforts in cervical cancer elimination, and the global breast cancer initiative are now accessible online. These resources serve as valuable references for scientists engaging in future studies at the local, regional, and global levels.
