UBD holds Ceremony for Haj Pilgrimage

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) held a special ceremony on 17 May 2024 to honour staff members embarking on the Haj pilgrimage this year. The event combined a donation presentation with the university’s weekly “Quranic Journey” programme.

UBD Vice-Chancellor Dr Hazri Haji Kifle presented the donations to 13 academic and administrative staff members who will be performing the Haj. This included five international staff members. This support reflects UBD’s commitment to its staff’s well-being and their spiritual growth.

The ceremony coincided with the university’s ongoing “Quranic Journey” initiative, launched in January 2023. The Quranic Journey, held every Friday morning consists of Talaqqi Al-Quran recitation practice sessions for students, the recitation of Surah Yasin, and Tadabbur Al-Quran sessions by prominent speakers, which delivers the exploration of the meaning, purpose and rulings derived from surahs in the Quran. These sessions are not only open to UBD members but also livestreamed on the university’s official Instagram account (@ubdbuzz) for the wider public’s benefit.

The “Quranic Journey” initiative aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the Quran among UBD staff and students. This aligns with Brunei Darussalam’s national aspiration to become a “Zikir Nation”, one that emphasises the importance of remembering and glorifying Allah (SWT).

The Quranic Journey plays a pivotal role in shaping UBD’s future graduates. By encouraging Quranic study and reflection, UBD hopes to empower its graduates to lead purposeful and blessed lives guided by the values of Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) and the university’s motto, “Towards Human Excellence”.
