Top Australian Scientist Showcases Tech to Achieve Net Zero

Principal research scientist and leading expert on decarbonisation, Dr. Naswhad Haque, from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), gave a seminar “Leading Edge Talk” at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) on the development of low emissions technologies for power generation in the UBD Library’s Ruang Bicara Minda on December 2, 2024. This seminar was hosted by the Centre for Advanced Material and Energy Sciences (CAMES) in collaboration with the Australian High Commission in Brunei Darussalam.

The seminar title is ‘Scientific Co-operation to Expand Hydrogen Technologies and Ammonia Co-firing for Power Generation’. Attendees included UBD principal officers, staff, researchers and students, as well as representatives from higher education institutions, the Brunei Economic Development Board, and agencies such as the Department of Electrical Services and the Ministry of Finance and Economy.

During the Leading Edge Talk, Dr Haque outlined low emissions technologies developed by CSIRO and described how adopting these technologies can lead to Net Zero by 2050. Net Zero is an environmental target in which the production and removal of greenhouse emissions are balanced, which can help meet climate change goals stipulated in the Paris Agreement. Dr Haque emphasised the importance of international cooperation and scientific collaboration in developing these technologies. Dr Haque also highlighted the importance of transitional research and discussed approaches for converting research into commercialised products.

Centre for Advanced Material and Energy Sciences (CAMES) is one of the research institutes in UBD that offers postgraduate Master and PhD degrees in materials science and energy studies. Research projects offered at CAMES include carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technologies, wastewater treatment, and sustainable industrial coatings. The CSIRO is Australia’s National Science Agency that aims to solve global challenges through innovative science and technology.
